Risk of Rain Codexery

Bandit

The world is a vault, the Void is the lock, and Bandit just wants the combination.

Bandit

Bandit is a masked, roguish survivor among the cast of playable characters in the Risk of Rain universe. Where other survivors lean on heavy firepower or arcane power, Bandit thrives on speed, precision, and the quiet confidence of someone who has already decided the world owes them a cut. They are the thief who slipped through the crash, the one who still has their knives sharp when the others are out of ammo.

In the broader context of the Risk of Rain world—where a crash-landed crew fights through escalating waves of alien fauna while a creeping force known as the Void slowly devours the landscape—Bandit represents the scrappy, self-reliant archetype. They do not wait for rescue. They do not pray for the signal to reach anyone. They run, they throw, they vanish, and they come back for another pass.

Lore & Background

The Risk of Rain universe is one of deliberate silence. Characters crash onto a hostile alien world, a distress signal bounces uselessly into a sky that may not be listening, and the ground itself seems to breathe with something patient and hungry. Bandit exists in that silence. There is no grand manifesto, no origin film, no named faction. What there is is a mask, a bandolier, and the unspoken understanding that everyone on this rock is already dead in some timeline and is simply choosing to keep moving.

What the environment tells us is enough. The flora is wrong—too red, too pulsing, too alive in a way that suggests the planet is not a planet but a stomach. The fauna comes in waves that grow more desperate and more numerous, as if the world is testing whether the intruders are worth keeping. And the Void—that slow, ink-black tide that swallows the edges of the map—suggests that the planet is not merely hostile but actively being unmade, layer by layer, into something that has no name yet.

Bandit's place in all of this is that of the one who does not stop to theorize. While others calculate, while others mourn, while others try to build a raft out of alien bone and hope, Bandit is already three hills over, already counting coins that do not exist yet, already deciding which of the things that chase them deserves a knife and which deserves to be left behind. It is a philosophy, not a plan. And in a world that is literally dissolving, philosophy is the only currency that does not inflate.

In Their Own Story

The rain is not rain. It is the world weeping in a language no one here speaks, and it falls in thick, warm sheets that smell of copper and old blood. Bandit crouches behind a rib of exposed rock—rock that is warm, that flexes slightly, that should not be warm—and watches the next wave crest the ridge.

They do not count. Counting is for people who think the numbers will stop. Instead, Bandit counts the gaps. The space between the jaw and the shoulder. The half-second where the thing turns and its back is a soft, unarmored dark. A knife leaves the hand. Not thrown. Released. A small, bright argument with the dark.

The Void is closer tonight. Bandit can feel it in the way the light bends wrong at the treeline, the way shadows pool in directions that do not correspond to any sun. They pull the mask up, tighten the bandolier, and run. Not away. Through. There is a difference, and the difference is everything, and the rain keeps falling, and the world keeps breathing, and Bandit is still here, still sharp, still owed.

Reader's Guide

The signal went out. It went out and went out and went out again, and no one answered. No one is coming. This is the first truth, and it is the one Bandit learned before the others, because Bandit was the one who checked the radio three times and heard only the static that sounds like a planet chewing.

The world is not a world. The ground pulses. The trees are too red, too wet, too aware. The things that come in waves are not animals. They are a test. A slow, patient, escalating test to see whether the intruders will break or will keep moving. Bandit keeps moving. That is the whole doctrine. No base. No camp. No sleeping in the same hollow twice.

The Void is the second truth. It does not attack. It does not chase. It simply arrives, a slow black tide at the edges of everything, and where it passes, the red light goes out and the ground stops breathing and there is only a flat, silent nothing that was once a hill, once a tree, once a name. Bandit has seen it take the eastern ridge. Bandit does not go to the eastern ridge.

The knives are not for glory. The mask is not for mystery. They are for the specific, practical problem of a world that is trying to digest you, and the only answer Bandit has is to be faster than the digestion, to be a small bright flicker that the stomach cannot quite hold still long enough to swallow. Run. Throw. Vanish. Return. Run again. The signal is still out there, bouncing off a sky that will not answer, and Bandit is still here, still sharp, still counting the gaps between the teeth of the world.
