The Survivors
The last of them, still breathing in a world the dark is eating.
The Survivors are the collective group of playable protagonists in Risk of Rain 2, the 2020 roguelike by Hopoo Games. They are the last known humans on a dying, post-apocalyptic planet slowly being consumed by the Void—a vast, encroaching force of darkness that erodes the landscape, spawns hostile creatures, and swallows everything in its path. Each Survivor carries a distinct skill set and a fragment of a larger, mostly silent story: what civilization existed before, what the Void truly is, and why so few remain.
Their role in the game and in the lore is one of desperate endurance. They scavenge ruins for artifacts, fight through endless procedurally generated waves of enemies, and try to outlast the Void's advancing tide. They are not a unified army; they are individuals who happen to share the same doomed world, bound together only by the fact that they are still breathing.

Lore & Background
The Survivors are not introduced with fanfare or exposition. They simply exist—waking in a broken world, picking up weapons, and moving forward. The planet they inhabit is scarred: forests twisted into unnatural shapes, structures half-buried in ash, and a sky that seems perpetually bruised. The Void presses in from the edges of every map, a wall of blackness that reshapes terrain and births creatures that have no business existing. The Survivors do not fight to conquer it. They fight to keep it at bay, one more day, one more run, one more breath.
Each Survivor carries the weight of a different past. The Commander speaks of duty and orders that no one is left to receive. The Seeker moves with a quiet, alien purpose, as though the Void is less an enemy and more a homecoming. The Bandit, the Doctor, the Engineer, the Hunter, the Intersect, the Flibble—each one is a small story compressed into a skill tree, a hint of a civilization that once had names for its cities, its wars, its small daily lives. What remains is rubble, artifacts, and the faint, glowing trail of the Voidling, a small dark creature that drifts beside the player like a compass needle pointing toward something no one can name.
The narrative of Risk of Rain 2 is deliberately sparse. Hopoo Games leaves vast gaps: the origin of the Void, the fate of the original inhabitants, the true nature of the artifacts that pulse with strange energy. The Survivors are the audience's proxy into that silence. They are the ones who keep walking through the dark, collecting what they can, and refusing to stop.
In Their Own Story
The rain was not rain. It was something that fell sideways, black and warm, tasting like iron and static. The Commander crouched behind a shattered wall that had once been a doorway, watching the Void creep over the ridge. It moved like a tide—patient, hungry, reshaping the trees it touched into something with too many joints.
Beside her, the Voidling pulsed. A small, dark thing, no bigger than a fist, its surface rippling with faint violet light. It had been following her since the first run, the second, the hundredth. She never asked where it came from. Asking felt like it would make it real in a way she wasn't ready for.
The Bandit was already moving, boots crunching over glass that had once been a window. "You hear that?" she called back, not looking up. The sound was low, structural, like the planet's bones settling. The Commander did not answer. She was counting the Survivors still standing. The number was smaller than it had been an hour ago.
The Void crested the ridge. The rain fell sideways. And they kept moving, because stopping was the one thing the dark was waiting for.
Reader's Guide
They do not remember the city. Or maybe they do, and the memory is just too heavy to carry through the ash. What they remember is the sound: a low, grinding hum, like the planet's spine cracking. And then the dark. Not night. Not shadow. Something that had weight and appetite and a slow, rolling patience.
The Survivors woke in a world that was no longer a world. The trees grew in spirals. The rivers ran uphill. The sky was the color of a bruise that would never heal. And at the edges of every clearing, every ruin, every half-collapsed structure—the Void. Pressing in. Reshaping. Eating.
They do not know how many were there before. They do not know what the artifacts are for, or who built them, or why they hum with a light that feels almost like a voice. The Voidling knows. Or thinks it does. It drifts close, pulsing, and the Survivors follow because the alternative is to stand still, and standing still is how the dark gets you.
Each run is a small death. Each run is also a small refusal. You pick up the weapon. You step into the next room. The Void is closer than it was. The Survivors are fewer than they were. And the rain—whatever it is—keeps falling sideways, and no one stops to ask why.
They keep moving. That is the whole story. That is the whole point. You keep moving, or you become part of the dark, and the dark does not remember your name.
Did You Know?
- Risk of Rain 2 was developed by Hopoo Games and launched out of early access in 2020, building on the 2013 original Risk of Rain.
- The Survivors are intentionally left without a unified origin story; each character's backstory is implied through sparse in-game text and visual design rather than explicit narrative.
- The Voidling, a small dark companion creature that follows the player, appears throughout gameplay and is visually tied to the Void's aesthetic, suggesting a connection to the encroaching force itself.
- The game's roguelike structure—procedurally generated maps, escalating difficulty, and permadeath—mirrors the lore's theme of endless, grinding survival against an unstoppable force.
