Octopus
A small, squirming nuisance that spits ink from the alien deep.
The Octopus is a small, purple-hued aquatic enemy that haunts the Ocean biome in Risk of Rain. It is one of the more common low-threat creatures survivors encounter while navigating underwater stages, often appearing in loose clusters near the seafloor or drifting mid-water. Despite its modest size and damage output, it is a reliable nuisance that tests a survivor's ability to manage multiple small ranged threats while dealing with other fauna in the same area.
As a ranged attacker, the Octopus keeps a modest distance from the player, firing slow, arcing ink-like projectiles that require a brief moment to cross the gap. It is rarely a solo kill threat, but its presence in groups—sometimes alongside jellyfish or larger sea creatures—adds a layer of positional pressure to Ocean-biome encounters.

Lore & Background
In the mutated oceans of this alien world, the Octopus is a common sight among the drifting kelp and bioluminescent flora. It is not the apex predator of the reef—far from it—but it has adapted to the strange chemistry of the water, its purple mantle pulsing with a faint inner glow that seems almost decorative. Survivors who have spent time in the Ocean biome report that the creatures appear almost curious, swaying toward the crash site's lingering electromagnetic hum before deciding it is not food and resuming their slow, undulating patrol.
The Octopus shares a general biological family with other small marine fauna in the biome, and its ink projectiles are a defensive secretion rather than a weapon in any predatory sense. In the broader ecology of the alien seas, it occupies a mid-low trophic niche: too small to threaten the larger leviathans, too numerous to be ignored by the survivors who need to cross the water to reach the next extraction point.
Fans often note the Octopus as a gentle introduction to the Ocean biome's pacing. Where the Forest biome throws swarms of fast melee creatures at you, the Ocean asks you to think about spacing, projectile timing, and whether that cluster of three is worth the risk of pulling aggro on the larger creature lurking behind them.
In Their Own Story
The water pressure against the visor made everything feel slow, like moving through cold syrup. The survivor kicked off a coral shelf and watched a cluster of purple shapes detach from the rock face—three of them, maybe four—tendrils curling as they oriented toward the heat signature of the suit. The first ink globule splattered against the shoulder plate, sizzling faintly. The second missed by an inch. The survivor rolled, came up shooting, and the first Octopus burst into a puff of violet mist that dissolved in the current. Two left. The jellyfish beyond them pulsed, indifferent. The survivor exhaled through the regulator and thought, *not today, little guys*, and fired again.
Reader's Guide
Name: Octopus Role in the Run: Low-tier ranged enemy; adds projectile pressure to Ocean-biome encounters.
Key Behavior & Attack Pattern: The Octopus maintains a short-to-mid range from the survivor, firing slow, arcing ink projectiles one at a time. It does not chase aggressively but will reposition slightly to keep its preferred distance. In groups of three to six, it creates a mild projectile-dodge puzzle, especially when combined with other Ocean fauna. It has low health and is typically killed in one or two hits depending on the survivor's loadout.
First Appearance Biome: Ocean (underwater stage).
Threat Level: Low. Individually it is rarely a problem. The danger comes from numbers and from being caught between Octopus fire and a larger melee creature in the same area.
How to Counter: Keep moving laterally to make the slow projectiles miss. Area-of-effect weapons (shotguns, grenade-type items, or AoE survivor abilities) are efficient for clearing small clusters in one swing. Survivors with high mobility (dash, slide) can close the gap quickly and eliminate them before they set up a second volley. There is no special item synergy required; it is simply a low-HP target that rewards not standing still.
Lore Connections: Shares the purple/magenta color language of other small alien fauna. Its ink secretion is a passive defense, consistent with the game's broader theme of alien biology being adapted rather than malicious.
Did You Know?
- The Octopus is one of the few enemies in the game whose entire attack is a single slow projectile, making it a useful benchmark for learning dodge timing in the Ocean biome.
- Its purple-magenta coloration matches the general visual language of smaller, lower-threat alien fauna across multiple biomes, distinguishing it from the larger, more saturated predators.
- In the Ocean biome, the Octopus often spawns in small clusters of three to six, creating a mild 'dodge-and-poke' rhythm that contrasts with the fast melee swarms of the Forest stage.
- Because it has low health, it is an easy early target for survivors building area-of-effect or splash-damage loadouts, making the Ocean stage a natural testing ground for those builds.
