Scout
All speed, all dash, zero patience for standing still.
The Scout is the default and most iconic survivor class in Risk of Rain 2, a fast, agile operative defined by her ability to dash through enemies and bunny-hop across the battlefield. She is the character players meet first when they step onto the alien planet, and her kit is built around horizontal mobility, rapid-fire pistol work, and the satisfying sensation of phasing straight through waves of hostile creatures.
In the broader narrative of the stranded survivors, the Scout represents the classic 'fast, light, hit-and-run' archetype. Where other survivors bring heavy firepower or defensive bulk, she thrives on constant motion, weaving between threats and repositioning before the enemy can lock onto her. She is the survivor who makes the player feel like they are dancing between bullets rather than standing still to absorb them.

Lore & Background
When the survivors' shuttle tore apart over the uncharted planet, the Scout was among those who made it to the ground. Her gear is built for sprinting and evading, not for holding a line, and her helmet visor filters out the alien spores that choke the air in the lower biomes. She moved fast before the crash and she moved fast after it, and the other survivors learned early that if the Scout is gone, she is either three biomes ahead or already fighting something they have not seen yet.
The planet's ecology is hostile and relentless, and the Scout's philosophy is simple: never be where the next hit lands. Her dash is not merely a movement tool; it is a weapon. She threads her body through the gaps in a horde, letting momentum and blade-edge damage do the work while her pistol keeps the pressure on anything that survives the pass. In the quiet moments between waves, she checks her ammo, recalibrates her visor, and listens for the distant shriek of whatever is next.
Among the survivor group, the Scout is the one who volunteers for the recon runs, the one who points out the hidden cache behind the waterfall or the nest of spore-bats in the cave ceiling. She does not give long speeches. She gives directions, a thumbs-up, and is already gone, a streak of green and teal vanishing over the ridge.
In Their Own Story
The forest biome was quiet in the way that meant it was about to stop being quiet. The Scout pressed her back against the mossy flank of a dead tree, pistol warm in her grip, and watched the patrol of Spitter Lizards shuffle past in a slow, clicking line. Three of them. Maybe four. She counted the tail-ends.
She exhaled. Shift. Her body compressed into a horizontal streak and she was through the second lizard before its mandibles finished snapping shut, the phase-damage tearing a ragged line along its carapace. She rolled out behind the third, pistol barking twice, and the creature's head went slack. The fourth never saw her.
She was already moving, bunny-hopping over a ridge of twisted root, when the ground ahead shuddered and something enormous lifted its head from the undergrowth. She grinned behind her visor. Good. She liked it when they got big.
She ran.
Reader's Guide
Name: Scout Role in the run: Fast, mobile damage dealer. The Scout excels at sustained DPS through constant repositioning, using her dash to close gaps, phase through clustered enemies, and escape dangerous situations. She is the most forgiving survivor to learn because her kit rewards movement rather than precise positioning.
Key abilities: • Primary – Pistol: A rapid-fire handgun with solid damage per shot. Scales well with attack-speed and critical-chance items. • Secondary – Bunny Hop: A high vertical leap that lets the Scout reach otherwise inaccessible platforms, escape ground-based threats, and reposition quickly in vertical biomes. • Tertiary – Dash: The Scout's defining tool. She dashes forward in a straight line, phasing through any enemies in her path and dealing damage to each one she passes. This makes her uniquely capable of clearing dense enemy clusters in a single pass. • Ultimate: A powerful finishing move that complements her dash and pistol for burst damage in tight spaces.
First-appearance biome: Available from the start in all biomes; her kit works in every environment, though open biomes like the desert and forest let her dash and bunny-hop shine.
Lore connections: Part of the core survivor group stranded on the alien planet. Her recon-oriented role ties into the group's need to map the planet and locate extraction points.
Item synergies (general): Items that boost movement speed, attack speed, critical chance, or dash-related effects complement her kit. Speed items make her dash recharges feel more frequent; crit items amplify her pistol's burst; items that add damage on dash or after movement rewards her constant repositioning. Avoid heavy, slow, tank-oriented builds that conflict with her mobility identity.
Did You Know?
- The Scout is the first survivor available to players in Risk of Rain 2, requiring no unlock and serving as the gateway character for new players.
- Her dash mechanic—phasing through enemies while dealing damage to each one passed—is unique among the survivor roster and makes her the only class that can clear a dense enemy cluster in a single horizontal pass.
- Because her kit is built around constant horizontal and vertical movement, the Scout is widely regarded by the community as the most beginner-friendly survivor to learn.
- Her bunny-hop gives her a vertical mobility option that no other survivor matches, letting her reach high platforms and escape ground-level threats that pin down slower classes.
