Risk of Rain Codexery

Voidling

A flicker of shadow in the grass, spitting light that burns like a warning.

Voidling

The Voidling is one of the most iconic and frequently encountered enemies in the Risk of Rain series, a small, dark, floating creature that drifts through the overgrown ruins of the planet. It is among the first hostile entities a survivor is likely to face, serving as the series' baseline 'common enemy' archetype. Though individually unremarkable, Voidlings appear in loose clusters and can quickly overwhelm a survivor who neglects them early in a run.

In both Risk of Rain (2013) and Risk of Rain 2 (2020), the Voidling occupies the role of the low-tier ranged nuisance: a hovering, amorphous blob of shadow that hovers at a safe distance and spits small, fast projectiles. It is not a boss, not an elite, and not a special encounter—just the ambient hostility of a world that does not want you there.

Lore & Background

The Voidling's origins are never spelled out in dialogue or codex entries. What players can observe is that it exists as a native hostile of the planet's surface biomes, drifting through the overgrown ruins as naturally as the wind moves through the grass. Its form is deliberately vague—a small, dark, almost liquid mass with faintly luminous points that suggest eyes or an inner glow—giving it a ghostly, otherworldly quality that contrasts with the more mechanical or biological enemies found deeper in the run.

Fans often speculate that Voidlings are residual manifestations of the same void or dimensional energy that the survivors' teleportation technology taps into, but no in-game text confirms this. What is consistent across both games is that they are ambient, numerous, and unthinking: they do not coordinate, they do not adapt, and they do not recognize the survivor as anything other than a threat to be shot at until destroyed. They are the planet's immune response, small and simple.

In Risk of Rain 2, the Voidling appears in the Grasslands and can also be found in later biomes in reduced numbers, serving as a reminder of the planet's baseline hostility even as the threats escalate around them.

In Their Own Story

The survivor crouched behind a shattered concrete pillar, rain hammering the overgrown grass in silver sheets. Three Voidlings hovered in a loose triangle above the meadow, their dark forms barely distinguishable from the bruised twilight sky. One turned—there was no face, no head, just a subtle shift in the glow of its two pinprick lights—and a thin, hissing dart of pale energy stitched through the air. The survivor rolled. The dart sparked off the pillar, leaving a scorch mark that smelled of ozone and burnt sugar.

"Right," the survivor muttered, checking the charge on their weapon. "Three little ghosts. Let's see how you like the dark."

They fired. The first Voidling dissolved into a puff of black motes that scattered in the rain. The second and third scattered, rising higher, circling. The survivor stood, rain dripping from their visor, and waited. They always came back. They always did.

Reader's Guide

Name: Voidling Role in the run: Basic ranged enemy, encountered in large numbers early in the Grasslands and in smaller quantities in later biomes.

Key abilities / attack patterns: The Voidling hovers at a moderate distance from the survivor and fires short bursts of small, fast-moving projectiles. It does not melee, does not charge, and does not call reinforcements. Its primary tactic is simple kiting—drift back when the survivor closes in, drift forward when the survivor retreats. In groups of four to six, their overlapping projectile streams can create a dense, hard-to-read wall of small shots, which is where their real danger lies.

First appearance biome: Grasslands (RoR2). Also present in later biomes at lower frequency.

Threat level: Low individually, moderate in swarms. A single Voidling is trivially defeated by almost any weapon. A cluster of eight or more, especially on higher difficulty or with the survivor low on health, can chip away at a build that lacks area-of-effect or projectile-blocking tools.

How to counter: Use area-of-effect attacks (explosions, slashes, shockwaves) to clear groups efficiently. Weapons with high fire rate or splash damage (shotguns, flamethrowers, grenade launchers) are particularly effective. Survivors with dash or mobility (Commando, Engineer) can kite them easily. Watch for them hovering above cover—they will shoot over obstacles. Do not ignore them in the early Grasslands; letting five or six build up while you loot a chest is a common way to die on a fresh run.

Lore connections: The Voidling's dark, amorphous form and faint inner glow visually echo the void/dimensional aesthetic of the series. Fans link them to the same unknown force that powers the survivors' teleportation, though this is never confirmed in-game.
