Stage Transitions
Survive the teleporter event, then brace for a harder world.
Stage Transitions are the moments when survivors leave one biome and enter another, forced onward by the planet's escalating hostility. After activating the teleporter and surviving its timed countdown—90 seconds on Drizzle, 110 seconds on Rainstorm, and 130 seconds on Monsoon—players must kill all remaining monsters before proceeding. In Risk of Rain 2, any unspent money converts to experience; in the original Risk of Rain, money is simply lost upon transition. On the penultimate level, players may choose to revisit previous levels via the Newt Altar and Bazaar Between Time to gather more items and experience before facing the final boss. These transitions are not merely travel; they are the game's primary mechanism for escalating danger and rewarding preparation.

Lore & Background
The alien planet of Risk of Rain is a living, reactive system. As time passes, the difficulty counter increments every 5 minutes—in Risk of Rain 2 it is visible to the player, but in the original Risk of Rain it is not directly visible (only the time elapsed is shown). This translates into semi-exponential growth in enemy attack strength and semi-logarithmic growth in enemy health. This forces survivors to choose between spending time building experience or completing levels quickly before monsters become more difficult. The planet's shifting geography is a direct response to the survivor's persistence—each transition represents a deeper penetration into hostile territory, where the environment itself seems to wake up and fight back. The longer a survivor persists, the more the planet escalates its defenses.
In Their Own Story
The teleporter hums to life, its countdown echoing across the stage. You fight through waves of monsters, including at least one boss, as the timer ticks down. When the countdown ends, no new monsters spawn, but you must hunt down every last enemy before you can leave. Any money you've hoarded converts to experience points as you step through the portal. On the penultimate level, you face a choice: take the teleporter to the final level, or use it to run through previous levels again, gaining more experience and items. Each revisit offers the same choice—proceed or continue gathering strength. On the final level, you must defeat the final boss to escape the planet and win the game.
Reader's Guide
Stage transitions are triggered by activating the teleporter, which begins a timed countdown: 90 seconds on Drizzle, 120 seconds on Monsoon. During this event, many more monsters appear, including at least one boss. After the countdown, no new monsters spawn, and you must kill all remaining enemies to proceed. Any leftover money converts to experience points upon leaving. On the penultimate level, you may choose to revisit previous levels via the teleporter to gather more items and experience; each revisited level offers the same choice to proceed or continue. The difficulty increases every five minutes through ten levels, with newly spawned monsters having more health and stronger attacks. Boss characters may also spawn before you find the teleporter on higher difficulties. In single-player, death ends the game; in multiplayer, dead players wait until the survivors reach the next level to be brought back.

Frequently Asked Questions
What triggers a Stage Transition?
Transitions occur when the stage timer expires or a Moon Portal is activated, forcing survivors to leave the current biome. This mechanism ensures players cannot stay in one area indefinitely without facing new challenges.
How does difficulty change during transitions?
Each transition increases the global difficulty factor, resulting in denser enemy compositions and stronger threats in the next biome. Survivors must adapt their loadouts to handle this escalating danger curve effectively.
Where do players go after a transition?
The procedural generation engine reshapes the landscape to deposit survivors into a new, more hostile environment on the alien planet. This randomization keeps every run unique and unpredictable regarding loot opportunities.
Is Stage Transition an enemy or character?
No, this is not a specific entity but rather the core progression system that dictates how runs evolve over time. It functions as the heartbeat of the game's difficulty curve rather than a narrative antagonist.
What item signals the end of a stage?
The Teleporter appears at the End of Stage to facilitate movement into the next environment once the timer condition is met. Activating it is required to continue progressing through the procedural progression mechanic.
