Risk of Rain Codexery

Stinger

A buzzing swarm of tiny furies that turns the forest into a living wasp nest.

Stinger

Stinger is a small, fast, flying insect-like enemy that haunts the early biomes of Risk of Rain 2. Part of the planet's mutated native fauna, it resembles a wasp or hornet and is one of the first aggressive creatures survivors encounter after dropping onto the alien world. Individually it is fragile, but it rarely travels alone — Stingers move in tight, buzzing clusters that dart in and out of a survivor's personal space with unsettling speed.

Its role in a run is that of a nuisance-tier threat: not a boss, not a wall of HP, but a persistent swarm that punishes sloppy movement and forces players to manage their spacing and cooldowns while hunting for items. For new players, a dense Stinger cluster can feel far more dangerous than the creature's actual stats suggest, making it a memorable early-game lesson in mobility and crowd control.

Lore & Background

The world of Risk of Rain 2 is a planet in the grip of an ongoing, unexplained catastrophe — the sky is wrong, the ecosystems are fractured, and the fauna has mutated into something that no longer fits any terrestrial classification. The Stinger is a product of that upheaval: a small, iridescent, six-limbed flyer whose stinger and compound eyes have been exaggerated to the point of looking almost cartoonish. It nests in the dense undergrowth of the Forest biome, where the canopy traps heat and the air shimmers with spores, and it treats any large, warm-blooded intruder as either a threat to be driven off or a meal to be torn apart.

Survivors who have spent enough time on the planet have learned to read the telltale hum before a Stinger cluster dives. The sound is low, almost subsonic, and it vibrates in the chest before the first one peels off the foliage and streaks toward you. In the lore implied by the game's environmental storytelling, creatures like the Stinger are not intelligent in any human sense; they are driven by the same mutated aggression that fuels the larger predators. They are the planet's immune system, and you are the pathogen.

Fans often joke that the Stinger is the only enemy in Risk of Rain 2 whose entire personality is 'I will be in your face in 0.4 seconds.' That immediacy, combined with the fact that they fly and therefore ignore ground obstacles, makes them a uniquely annoying early encounter compared to the slower, more telegraphed ground enemies.

In Their Own Story

The canopy was thick, the air thick with the smell of wet bark and something sweeter — rot, maybe, or nectar from a flower that shouldn't exist. Bandit had been running for two minutes, boots slapping the moss, when the hum started. Low. In the teeth. He stopped, hand on his pistol, and watched a Stinger peel off a fern frond and hover, one iridescent eye catching the dim green light. Then another. Then six more, fanning out in a loose crescent above the undergrowth. They didn't charge. Not yet. They circled, dipping and rising, and the sound built until it was less a buzz and more a pressure against his eardrums. He backed up, slow, keeping his eyes on the cluster. One of them broke formation, dropped to his shoulder height, and stung the air an inch from his ear. The others followed. He fired once, wide, just to make them scatter, and kept running. Behind him, the hum faded, then swelled again. They were already regrouping.

Reader's Guide

Stinger Role in the run: Basic flying enemy, early-game nuisance tier. Stingers are among the first aggressive creatures survivors face, typically encountered in the Forest biome during the first few minutes of a run. They are not a source of meaningful loot or progression; their purpose is to test a survivor's mobility, cooldown management, and comfort with aerial threats.

Key behavior and attack pattern: Stingers are fast, low-HP flyers that attack in tight groups. They dash toward the survivor in quick, zigzagging bursts, sting on contact, and immediately pull back to reposition. They ignore ground obstacles and terrain features, making cover behind trees or rocks unreliable. A cluster of four to six can lock onto a survivor and maintain pressure for several seconds, which is more than enough to chip through a low-health survivor or interrupt a channel.

First appearance biome: Forest. Stingers are most commonly found in the dense, spore-filled undergrowth of the Forest, though they can occasionally appear in adjacent early biomes. They are not a late-game or boss-tier threat.

Lore connections: As part of the planet's mutated fauna, Stingers share the same iridescent, exaggerated insectoid design language as other native creatures. They represent the 'small but numerous' end of the ecosystem, contrasting with the larger, slower predators that dominate later biomes.

How to counter: Area-of-effect weapons (shotguns, flamethrowers, grenades) are the most efficient way to clear a cluster in one or two hits. Survivors with crowd-control abilities — knockback, root, or stun — can freeze a group and finish them off. Keep moving; standing still while a Stinger cluster repositions is the fastest way to get swarmed. Watch for the telltale hum and the first one breaking formation; that's your cue to reposition before the full group commits.
