Beetle
Small body, impenetrable shell, and a bite that never misses the mark.
Beetle is one of the playable survivors in Risk of Rain, a small, heavily armored insectoid creature who fights alongside the crew of crash-landed misfits on an alien world. Where many survivors rely on ranged firepower or support tools, Beetle is a close-quarters bruiser who trades raw damage output for a unique defensive shell that lets it shrug off hits that would drop more fragile companions.
As a survivor, Beetle joins the chaotic, wave-based combat that defines the game's loop: fight through escalating hordes of alien enemies across shifting biomes, collect items that reshape your loadout, and push as deep into the planet's hostile frontier as the team can manage. Beetle's kit rewards players who like to stay in the thick of the fight, using its shell to create windows of safety while it chews through enemies up close.

Lore & Background
The survivors of the crashed transport are a motley crew pulled from different corners of the galaxy, and Beetle is perhaps the most alien among them. A compact, chitinous creature with a broad, rounded carapace and a pair of powerful mandibles, it fights with the instinctive, relentless aggression of a creature that has spent its entire life defending itself from predators. It does not speak in the way the human survivors do, but it communicates through clicks, postures, and the unmistakable sound of its shell locking into place.
On the planet, Beetle's role in the group is straightforward: it holds the line. When the waves of spitter, stinger, and larger predators surge forward, Beetle is the one that plants itself in the gap, raises its shell, and lets the blows land while the rest of the crew repositions. The other survivors have learned, through hard experience, that the small beetle is not to be underestimated. Its shell has taken hits that would have vaporized a Commando, and its bite has opened up enemies that were twice its size.
The planet itself remains a mystery to all of them. The biomes shift, the enemies evolve, and no one has yet found a satisfactory explanation for why this world is so aggressively hostile. Beetle, for its part, does not seem troubled by the questions. It knows one thing: there is something to kill, and it is going to kill it.
In Their Own Story
The ground trembled again. Beetle felt it through the soles of its legs before the first spitter crested the ridge, its acidic spit sizzling against the rock face. Around it, the crew scattered—Commando barking orders, Engineer fumbling with a half-built turret, Treehugger already reaching for a vine.
Beetle did not scatter. It dropped low, tucked its legs beneath its broad thorax, and clicked once. The shell rose. The first glob of acid struck the carapace and hissed, leaving a faint white streak that would fade by morning. The second hit. The third. Beetle's legs braced against the impact, and the world narrowed to the sound of acid on chitin and the wet snap of its own mandibles closing on the spitter's exposed thorax.
Behind it, the turret finally hummed to life. Beetle did not turn to watch. It simply kept biting, kept clicking, kept the line. The shell would come down when the wave broke. It always did.
Reader's Guide
Name: Beetle Role in the run: Melee tank and frontline defender. Beetle excels at absorbing punishment and converting it into close-range damage, making it ideal for holding chokepoints and protecting more fragile survivors.
Key abilities: Beetle's primary attack is a fast melee bite that hits in a short arc in front of the character. Its special ability, Shell, raises Beetle's carapace to block incoming damage for a brief duration. While the shell is active, Beetle is largely invulnerable to projectile and melee hits, but it cannot attack. The short cooldown between shell activations is the core rhythm of playing Beetle: bite, bite, shell, reposition, repeat.
First appearance biome: Beetle is a selectable character from the start and is not tied to a single biome. It performs well in any environment, though its melee range makes it feel most at home in tighter, more enclosed areas where enemies are forced into close quarters.
Lore connections: Beetle is part of the core survivor crew in Risk of Rain and shares the roster with Commando, Engineer, Treehugger, Gunner, Commander, Mercenary, Rook, Mantis, Librarian, and D9. Its presence on the crew underscores the game's theme of a diverse group of beings thrown together by circumstance.
Item synergies: Items that boost melee damage, attack speed, and armor complement Beetle's kit naturally. Health-regeneration items and movement-speed boosts also help it reposition between shell activations. Because Beetle's damage is entirely melee, items that increase range are generally less useful than those that amplify close-quarters output.
Countering Beetle (as an enemy context): While Beetle is a survivor and not an enemy, players facing a Beetle in co-op scenarios will find its shell makes it nearly untouchable during its active window. Focus on attacking during its bite animations or when its shell is on cooldown.
Did You Know?
- Beetle is one of the more physically distinct survivors in Risk of Rain, standing out as a non-humanoid insectoid in a crew that is otherwise mostly humanoid or robot-shaped.
- Beetle's Shell ability is one of the few defensive mechanics in the game that fully blocks damage rather than merely reducing it, making it a unique tool for survivability.
- As a melee-only survivor, Beetle is one of the few characters in Risk of Rain that cannot deal ranged damage at all, forcing a fundamentally different playstyle compared to gun-based survivors.
- Beetle's small hitbox makes it harder for enemies to target and hit, an implicit defensive advantage that stacks on top of its shell mechanic.
