Artifact of the Prodigy
One touch, one roll, one run changed forever.
The Artifact of the Prodigy is a passive pickup found throughout the procedurally generated biomes of Risk of Rain 2, the top-down roguelike by Hopoo Games. Unlike the game's standard items that scale with stacking, the Prodigy is a one-shot catalyst: the moment a survivor's hand closes around it, a random buff is rolled and applied to that character for the remainder of the run. It is one of many alien artifacts littering the expedition site, each humming with residual energy from a civilization no one has ever identified.
In practice the Prodigy is a wildcard in build planning. Because the buff it grants is drawn from a pool of varied stat modifiers, a single pickup can swing a run from "solidly mid" to "absurdly overpowered"—or, less often, to something underwhelming. Veterans learn to treat it as a small gamble and to plan their item synergies around the possibility that it might land at the worst possible moment.

Lore & Background
The expedition logs recovered from the first wave of survivors are sparse on the Prodigy. What they do agree on is the sensation: a faint warmth, a flicker of light that seems to shift between amber and pale violet, and then a sudden, wordless certainty that something about your body has shifted. No one on the team can explain the mechanism. The artifact does not look like a weapon, a tool, or a communication device. It looks like a small, faceted shard of something that was once alive, now dormant, still leaking a thread of its original intent.
In the broader mythology fans have built around the Risk of Rain universe, the artifacts are the detritus of a species that seeded the planet with challenges—trials meant to test whatever evolved or arrived next. The Prodigy, in that reading, is the "wildcard trial." It does not test strength or speed. It tests whether you can adapt to a change you did not choose, in a moment you did not anticipate. The planet, in a sense, is rolling a die in your hand and watching you play the card it dealt.
Survivor forums are littered with stories. A Commando who picked up the Prodigy and walked out with a damage multiplier that made the final boss a speedrun. A Huntress whose buff boosted her movement speed just enough to kite a Colossus she otherwise would have died to. And, inevitably, the survivor who got a minor shield increase and muttered into the comms that the planet had a sense of humor.
In Their Own Story
The mud on the lower ridge was knee-deep and smelled of iron. Kaito wiped his visor and watched the Colossus lumber past, its shadow swallowing the treeline. He had two health bars left, a half-charged shotgun, and the particular calm that comes from knowing you are about to die.
Then he saw it. Half-buried in the silt, a shard no bigger than his thumb, pulsing with a slow amber glow. His fingers found it before his brain finished the thought. The warmth hit his chest like a swallowed ember, and for one disorienting second his vision sharpened, his muscles tightened, and the world tilted just slightly in a way he could not name.
The Colossus turned. Kaito turned back. And something in his stride, in the weight of his boots, in the snap of the shotgun's recoil, was different. He did not know what it was. He did not need to know. He just ran, and for the first time in this wretched expedition, the ground felt like it was trying to keep up with him.
Reader's Guide
Effect: Upon collection, the Artifact of the Prodigy immediately rolls one random buff from a fixed pool of stat modifiers (damage, movement speed, shield, health regeneration, attack speed, and similar attributes) and applies it to the collecting survivor. The buff persists for the rest of the current run and does not reset on death.
Obtaining: The artifact spawns as a ground pickup in standard enemy drops, elite drops, and occasional world-placement spots across all biomes. It is not tied to a specific enemy or boss. It appears as a small glowing shard on the ground and is collected by walking over it.
Stacking: The artifact itself does not stack in the traditional Risk of Rain sense. However, you can pick up multiple Prodigy artifacts in a single run. Each pickup triggers an independent roll, so a second Prodigy grants a second, separate random buff. There is no known cap on how many you can collect, though in practice the spawn rate limits this to a handful per run.
Interactions: The buffs it grants are additive with your existing item stats. For example, if you already have a damage-boosting item and the Prodigy rolls a damage buff, the two stack linearly. It does not interact with or modify other artifacts. It also does not affect the item-duplication or item-scaling mechanics that govern the game's core progression loop.
Edge cases: The buff applies to the character who physically collects the shard. In co-op, it does not transfer to teammates. If a player dies and respawns (in modes that allow it), the buff remains on that character. The roll is not visible to the player until the buff is applied, so you will not know which stat was boosted until you check your HUD.
Did You Know?
- The Prodigy's buff is rolled at the instant of collection, meaning two survivors picking it up in the same frame in co-op each get their own independent roll.
- Because the buff pool includes both offensive and defensive modifiers, a single Prodigy can simultaneously make a build stronger and more fragile depending on which stat it lands on.
- The artifact's visual design—a small, faceted, amber-and-violet shard—echoes the broader visual language of alien technology throughout Risk of Rain 2, where most non-organic objects share that crystalline, bioluminescen
- In the Risk of Rain 2 community, the Prodigy is often jokingly referred to as 'the planet's slot machine,' a nickname that has stuck in speedrun communities where a single good roll can shave seconds off a boss fight.
