Lizard
Small, scaly, and swarming—the jungle's first reminder that the drop pod is not a safe zone.
The Lizard is one of the most basic and frequently encountered melee enemies in Risk of Rain. A small, scaly, green-skinned creature, it serves as the quintessential early-game foe that introduces players to the game's combat loop: close-range aggression, quick dodging, and building up your arsenal before facing tougher threats.
Though individually unremarkable, Lizards can appear in swarms that test a survivor's mobility and crowd-control options. They are the kind of enemy that feels harmless until you're surrounded by a dozen of them in a narrow jungle corridor, forcing you to rethink your spacing and item build.

Lore & Background
The Lizard is a product of the same unexplained biological upheaval that reshaped the planet Risk of Rain's survivors crash onto. The flora and fauna here do not match any known terrestrial ecosystem; the Lizard's exaggerated jaw, iridescent scales, and aggressive territorial behavior suggest a creature adapted to a world where predation is constant and the food chain is compressed into a handful of brutal tiers.
Survivor logs and community lore describe the Lizard as the baseline predator of the jungle floor—small enough to hide in undergrowth, fast enough to ambush, and numerous enough to overwhelm an unprepared drop team. It is the first thing most survivors see when the canopy parts after a crash, darting between roots and snapping at exposed limbs. In that moment, the game's central tension is established: you are not the apex here, not yet.
Unlike the more exotic fauna of later biomes, the Lizard has no apparent intelligence beyond instinct. It does not coordinate, does not retreat, and does not adapt. It simply lunges, bites, and dies. And then another one lunges. This mindless repetition is, in its own way, the most honest expression of the world's hostility: the planet does not hate you. It simply does not care whether you survive.
In Their Own Story
The canopy was still dripping when the pod's hull groaned and settled into the mud. You kicked the hatch open, rain sheeting off your visor, and the first thing you saw was a pair of yellow eyes fixed on you from behind a rotting log. Then another pair. Then six more, all blinking in unison as if the jungle itself had decided to watch.
You raised your weapon. The nearest Lizard hissed, its jaw splitting wide to reveal a row of needle teeth, and lunged. You sidestepped, felt the wet snap of its claws raking your shoulder pad, and put a burst of rounds into its chest. It folded. The others scattered into the ferns, then circled back, patient, clicking their mandibles.
You counted nine. Maybe ten. Your magazine was full. The jungle stretched in every direction, green and indifferent, and somewhere beyond the treeline a Lurker was already turning its head toward the sound.
Reader's Guide
Name: Lizard Role: Basic melee enemy; the introductory combat threat in a run.
The Lizard is a small, fast, low-health melee attacker. It locks onto the nearest survivor and sprints in a direct line, lunging with a quick bite attack that deals a single hit of modest damage. It has no ranged phase, no special abilities, and no recovery behavior—once engaged, it commits until it dies or the player breaks line-of-sight.
First appearance biome: Jungle. It can also appear in the Cave in smaller numbers, but the Jungle is its home turf and where it spawns most densely.
Behavior and threat level: Individually, the Lizard is trivial. In groups of five or more, it becomes a genuine mobility test, especially in tight corridors or around large objects. They do not coordinate attacks but their converging paths can pin a survivor briefly. Threat level is Low for a prepared survivor; Moderate if you are still building your first item stack.
Counters and tips: Any basic weapon handles a single Lizard in one or two hits. The real challenge is crowd control—AoE weapons (shotguns, grenades, early-game explosives) and mobility items (dash, speed boosts) let you clear a pack efficiently. Watch for Lizards flanking from behind large jungle obstacles; they will pop out with a lunge that catches you off guard if you're focused on the front group. Do not stand still to let them close; keep moving and let them commit to a line so you can sidestep and punish.
Did You Know?
- The Lizard is one of the first enemies most players face after a crash, making it the de facto tutorial enemy for Risk of Rain's combat system.
- Despite its small size, the Lizard's lunge animation is noticeably faster than its walk cycle, creating a brief 'wind-up' window that skilled players can exploit to sidestep.
- In swarms, Lizards can create a psychological pressure loop: each one is easy, but the constant re-engagement drains focus and magazine, setting up a harder encounter with a mid-tier enemy moments later.
- The Lizard's design—small, green, scaly, aggressive—echoes the classic 'jungle basic' enemy archetype found in countless action games, making it an instantly readable threat even for new players.
