Artifact of the Depths

Dig deeper, and the Overworld gives back more of its secrets.

Artifact of the Depths

The Artifact of the Depths is a passive world pickup in Risk of Rain 2, part of the game's broader Artifact system that grants permanent stat modifications for the duration of a run. Unlike the more straightforward stat-boosting Artifacts (Moon, Sun, Storm, and so on), the Depths artifact operates on the meta-layer of the run itself: it shifts the probability of additional Artifacts appearing in the stages that follow, rewarding players who push deeper into the Overworld with a richer pool of modifiers to collect.

It sits in the mid-to-late game's Artifact spawn table, meaning it is unlikely to appear in the very first stage but becomes a realistic target once the player has cleared several zones. Finding it early in a run can dramatically alter the trajectory of that playthrough, turning a modest build into a densely stacked one by the time the player reaches the boss encounters.

Lore & Background

The Overworld is a place that breathes. Its flora shifts, its fauna mutates, and its very ground seems to rearrange itself between one stage and the next. The Artifact of the Depths is one of the few objects that appears to be *of* the Overworld rather than merely *on* it—its surface is pitted and layered like sediment, as though it was compressed from the strata of a thousand collapsed biomes. It does not glow so much as *absorb* the ambient light around it, pulling the eye inward.

Survivors of the Overworld speak of it in hushed, practical terms. It is not a weapon, not a shield, not a source of power in the way the Moon or the Sun Artifacts are. It is a *key*—a mechanism that tells the Overworld to open more of its vaults. Players who find it report that the stages that follow feel different: more cluttered, more generous, as if the world is shedding its hoard because something in the ground has been woken up and is restless.

In the broader mythology fans have built around the Overworld's origin—its alien botany, its engineered fauna, its purpose as a quarantine zone or a living weapon—the Depths Artifact fits the pattern of a control mechanism. The Overworld was not meant to be explored linearly. It was meant to *resist* exploration, releasing its contents only to those who prove they can survive the pressure of its own systems. The Depths Artifact is, in that reading, a pressure valve: the Overworld conceding that the intruder has earned the right to take more.

In Their Own Story

The signal pinger had been dead for three stages. Mira set it in the mud and did not look back. The canopy above was a bruised violet, the air thick with the smell of crushed spore-bloom, and somewhere behind her the distant thrum of a boss fight she would never hear finished.

She found it half-buried in a ridge of black sediment, the way a tooth is found in a jaw—just sitting there, waiting. The Artifact of the Depths. It was warm, which was wrong; nothing in the Overworld was warm unless it was about to kill you. She turned it over in her gauntleted hand. The pitting on its surface caught the dim bioluminescence and held it, pooling the light in little dark wells.

"Okay," she said to no one. To the canopy. To the mud. To whatever was listening in the roots.

The next stage opened wider than it should have. Three Artifacts glinted in the undergrowth where one would normally be. Mira picked up the first, then the second, then the third, and smiled the way you smile when a door you thought was load-bearing turns out to be a closet. The Overworld was giving. The Overworld was *tired of holding back.*

She walked deeper.

Reader's Guide

EFFECT: Increases the probability that additional Artifacts spawn in all subsequent stages of the current run. The boost is multiplicative on the base spawn table, so the further into the run you are when you pick it up, the more pronounced the effect becomes.

OBTAINMENT: Spawns as a standard world pickup (the familiar glowing canister) in mid-to-late stages. It is not guaranteed to appear in a given run; its spawn weight is lower than common stat-boosting Artifacts. Check every stage's pickup list—do not skip a stage because it "looks empty."

STACKING: Single instance per run. Picking it up a second time (if a duplicate somehow spawned) yields no additional benefit. It does not stack with itself.

INTERACTIONS: Because it raises the spawn rate of *all* other Artifacts, it synergizes with any build strategy that depends on collecting a specific set (e.g., stacking Moon + Diamond for damage, or Sun + Jade for survivability). It does not alter the stat values of Artifacts you already hold—only the odds of finding new ones. It also does not affect Relic, Weapon, or Companion spawn rates; its effect is scoped to the Artifact pool specifically.

EDGE CASES: If picked up in the final stage before a boss, the increased spawn rate has no further stages to apply to, making it effectively a dead pickup. Conversely, picking it up in stage 2 or 3 can result in a run where nearly every subsequent stage carries multiple Artifacts, dramatically accelerating build completion.
