Risk of Rain Codexery

Behemoth

The planet's oldest fang, and it remembers every survivor who dared to stand still.

Behemoth

The Behemoth is one of the most imposing boss-tier enemies in the Risk of Rain series, a colossal segmented creature that slithers through the overgrown ruins and dense forests of the planet. Part worm, part serpent, and entirely ancient, it represents the kind of primordial life that thrived long before the survivors' crash and the temporal Rain that warps the world around them. Its sheer size, tanky health pool, and punishing charge attacks make it a memorable gauntlet for any team that underestimates it.

Lore & Background

Long before the first survivor's pod tore through the sky, the Behemoth crawled through the deep root systems and buried canyons of this world. It is not a mutant, not a weapon, not a construct. It is simply *old*—a creature whose lineage stretches back to the planet's earliest ecosystems, predating the strange temporal distortions that the survivors call the Rain. Where the Rain scrambles the biology of lesser fauna, turning them into aggressive, mutated horrors, the Behemoth endures largely unchanged, as though the anomaly passes over it like wind over a mountain. Its segmented carapace, thick as a city wall, bears the scars of eons rather than a single battle.

In Their Own Story

The mud was three inches deep and smelled of copper and rot. Juno crouched behind a shattered monolith, watching the ridge line. Then the ridge *moved*. A single segment, vast and barnacled, rose above the treeline like a slow wave. The Behemoth had been buried there for what felt like days, and now it was waking. It uncoiled with a sound like a cathedral collapsing, and the charge that followed flattened a grove of trees in one breath. The team scattered. The Behemoth did not chase. It simply *was* where they had been, and then it was where they were. Juno fired her rifle into its flank and felt the rounds vanish like pebbles into a river. It spat a glob of something acidic that detonated against the monolith, and the stone hissed and cracked. "It's not angry," she muttered, reloading. "It's just... passing through. And we're in the way."

Reader's Guide

Name: Behemoth Role in the run: Boss-tier enemy that serves as a major mid-to-late run checkpoint. Defeating it yields a loot chest and a significant experience bump, making it a worthwhile target once the team has enough damage output.

Key behaviors and attack patterns: The Behemoth moves slowly but with relentless momentum. Its primary attack is a full-body charge toward the nearest survivor, which is nearly impossible to outrun in open ground. It also spits a slow, arcing projectile that explodes on impact, creating a small area of damage. When cornered or heavily damaged, it may perform a secondary lunge or ground-slam. Its health pool is enormous, so fights can drag on if the team lacks sustained DPS.

First appearance biome: The Behemoth can spawn in multiple biomes across the map, including the Green Hell and the Dark Woods, among others. It is not restricted to a single zone.

Lore connections: As one of the planet's ancient, pre-Rain fauna, the Behemoth sits in the same mythic tier as other primordial creatures. It is not a victim of the temporal anomaly but a survivor of it, which sets it apart from the mutated horrors that dominate the lower tiers.

How to counter: Kiting is essential—keep the Behemoth moving in a circle rather than letting it lock onto a single player. AoE damage (flames, lightning, poison) shaves its health far more efficiently than single-target shots. Use environmental cover (rocks, ruins) to break its charge line. If multiple players are present, stagger your focus: one player draws the charge while the others deal damage from the flank. Do not stand still. Do not stand in a line. And for the love of the Rain, do not let it charge a player who is already low on health.
