Risk of Rain Codexery

Seagull

A white blur in the salt wind — small, fast, and always circling your head.

Seagull

The Seagull is a small, agile flying enemy that haunts the sun-bleached shores of the Beach biome in both Risk of Rain and Risk of Rain 2. It is one of the most recognizable early-game encounters, a skittering white-and-grey bird that circles overhead before swooping down in a quick, punishing dive. For survivors who have just crash-landed onto unfamiliar sand, the Seagull is often the first hostile thing to test their reflexes.

Despite its modest size and low health, the Seagull's aerial mobility makes it a persistent nuisance. It rarely sits still, darting in tight arcs and repositioning to keep a survivor's aim off-target. In groups, its coordinated swooping can chip away at a low-health character before they even find a solid target to focus on.

Lore & Background

No survivor's logbook offers a proper taxonomy for the creatures of this overgrown world, and the Seagull is no exception. It appears only in the Beach biome, skimming above the pale dunes and the strange, half-buried wreckage that litter the shore. Its cries cut through the ambient hum of alien vegetation, a sharp, grating call that feels almost mocking to anyone trying to salvage what they can from the crash site.

In the broader ecology of the planet, the Seagull seems to occupy a scavenger's niche. It does not build, does not appear in packs of dozens, and is rarely seen away from the shoreline. Survivors who have spent multiple runs on the Beach note that the birds seem to grow bolder as the day progresses, circling closer and diving more aggressively — a behavior that mirrors the escalating difficulty the game's director imposes on every subsequent stage.

Whether the Seagull is a native species of this world or a remnant of something that existed before the cataclysm that scattered the survivors remains unclear. Its appearance is deceptively familiar, almost terrestrial, which makes its alien context all the more unsettling. It is, in many ways, the first reminder that the world outside the crash site does not recognize the survivors as anything other than another thing to peck at.

In Their Own Story

The sand was still warm from the morning sun when Wisp first heard the shrieking. She'd been three minutes into the Beach, already knee-deep in a tangle of pale, writhing root-things that had no business growing in salt water, when the shadow passed overhead. One. Two. A small white shape, banking, banking again, its beak a dark needle against the bleached sky.

She raised her rifle. The Seagull folded its wings and dropped like a stone, a streak of grey and white aimed squarely at her face. She fired a single round. The bird tumbled, hit the sand with a wet, papery sound, and did not get up.

Above her, three more were already turning.

Wisp holstered the rifle, pulled her hood up against the salt spray, and started running. The beach stretched on forever, and the screaming followed.

Reader's Guide

Name: Seagull Role in the Run: Low-tier flying enemy, primarily encountered in the Beach biome. Serves as an early-game introduction to aerial threats and forces survivors to manage vertical targets.

Behavior and Attack Pattern: The Seagull hovers in a loose circular or figure-eight pattern above the survivor, maintaining a safe altitude. It then commits to a quick, straight-line dive aimed at the player's position, dealing a single hit of moderate damage before pulling up and repositioning. In Risk of Rain 2, multiple Seagulls in a wave will stagger their swoops, creating a rhythm of incoming dives that can interrupt a survivor's attack animation or force them to break line-of-sight. They do not attack while perched or while repositioning, giving a brief window to land hits.

Threat Level: Low individually. A single Seagull can be dispatched in one or two hits by most survivors. The real danger comes in numbers — a wave of four to six can overwhelm a low-health or slow-attacking character, especially if the survivor is focused on a larger ground enemy and neglects the aerial harassment.

How to Counter: Aim slightly above the Seagull's current position to lead your shot, as its dive is fast and its horizontal repositioning is quick. Area-of-effect weapons (shotguns, grenade launchers, or AoE melee swings) are highly effective against groups. Survivors with strong vertical attack options (upward slashes, area explosions) can clear multiple birds in a single swing. Keep your movement lateral rather than vertical to make it harder for the Seagull to lock onto your position during its dive.

Lore Connections: The Seagull's exclusive presence in the Beach biome ties it to the coastal ecology of the overgrown world. Its scavenger-like behavior and terrestrial appearance contrast with the more overtly alien fauna found in deeper biomes, reinforcing the idea that the Beach is the most 'familiar' — and therefore the most deceptively dangerous — starting zone.
