Artifact of the Warden
The storm breaks; the Warden's oath does not.
The Artifact of the Warden is a rare, story-adjacent artifact in Risk of Rain 2, tied directly to the Warden—the towering, armored sentinel who holds the Warden's Lair stage. Unlike the bulk of loot that rains down from supply drops, this artifact is earned through direct confrontation with one of the game's most imposing bosses, making it a tangible trophy of survival in a world where the rain itself is a hostile force.
In the broader Risk of Rain 2 ecosystem, artifacts occupy a special niche: they are not weapons or armor but singular, transformative items that reshape how a run plays out. The Artifact of the Warden channels a sliver of the Warden's own defensive might into the survivor who carries it, turning a late-game power spike into a permanent (for the duration of the run) shift in how the player interacts with the storm.

Lore & Background
In the shattered world of Risk of Rain 2, the Warden is less a creature than a function: a living lock on a door that must not open. The Warden's Lair is a cathedral of rusted metal and bioluminescent flora, a place where the rain falls in slow, deliberate sheets and the air tastes of ozone and old iron. The Warden stands at its heart, a broad-shouldered figure in layered plate, its face hidden behind a visor that glows faintly amber. It does not speak. It does not need to. Its presence is the message: *nothing passes.*
Survivors who have scraped through the earlier stages—Garden of Ruin, Lost Village, the treacherous middle stages—arrive at the Warden's Lair expecting a fight. What they get is a test of endurance. The Warden's attacks are slow, deliberate, and devastating, each swing of its great blade carving arcs of force that reshape the arena. It is not fast. It does not need to be. By the time a survivor has dodged the third or fourth swing, the arena has been halved, and the Warden is already winding up again.
Those rare few who emerge from that gauntlet with their health bar still a stubborn sliver above zero find, at the Warden's feet, the Artifact of the Warden. It is not a weapon. It is not a key. It is a compact, heavy object—part sigil, part shard—warm to the touch and humming with a low, resonant frequency that seems to match the survivor's own heartbeat. Picking it up is not a victory. It is an acknowledgment: the Warden has let you pass, and in doing so, has pressed a fragment of its own unyielding will into your hands. The rain will still fall. The Director will still be waiting. But for the rest of this run, you carry the Warden's promise that you will not fall so easily.
In Their Own Story
The rain had a rhythm here. Not the chaotic, sideways lash of the Garden, not the acid-sting of the Lost Village. Here it fell in long, slow threads, each drop striking the metal floor with a sound like a finger tapping a tabletop. Milla crouched behind a shattered pillar, her shield flickering, and counted the Warden's swings. One. Two. Three. Each one slower than the last. Each one closer.
On the fourth, she rolled. Not away—*through*. The blade carved the pillar she'd been hiding behind into two halves, and the Warden's visor tracked her movement with the unhurried patience of a predator that has already decided the outcome. Milla's shield cracked. Her health bar bled red.
She didn't dodge the fifth swing. She met it. Shield against blade, and the impact drove her boots into the floor, sparks cascading in a ring. The Warden's arm trembled. For one half-second, the visor's amber glow flickered. And in that half-second, Milla saw it: the object at the Warden's feet. Small. Warm. Humming.
She grabbed it. The Warden did not strike again. It simply… stepped aside. The rain kept falling. The door behind the Warden's Lair groaned open, revealing the next stage, the next impossible odds. Milla clutched the artifact against her chest, felt its low thrum sync with her pulse, and walked forward into the storm.
Reader's Guide
What it does: The Artifact of the Warden grants a substantial, flat increase to the survivor's maximum health and a proportional boost to damage resistance. The exact values scale with the survivor's current level, making it a late-game power spike rather than an early-game crutch. It does not add new attacks or change the survivor's kit; it makes the survivor *harder to kill*, mirroring the Warden's own defensive philosophy.
How it's obtained: The artifact is found in the Warden's Lair stage, specifically at the base of the Warden boss after the boss is defeated. It is not a random drop; it is a fixed reward for clearing that encounter. If the Warden is skipped or the stage is bypassed (via certain progression paths), the artifact is not available.
Stacking rules: The Artifact of the Warden is a single-instance item. Picking up a second copy (which is not possible under normal conditions) does not stack the bonus. It occupies one artifact slot and cannot be duplicated within a run.
Interactions: The health and resistance bonuses are additive with other armor-type items and do not multiply with them. It does not interfere with or enhance other artifacts. Because it is a flat bonus rather than a percentage, it synergizes well with builds that already have high base health. It does not trigger on-hit effects or on-kill effects. Edge case: if the survivor dies and respawns (via a revive item or similar), the artifact's bonus persists for the remainder of the run and does not reset.
Did You Know?
- The Warden's Lair is one of the later stages in Risk of Rain 2's progression, meaning most survivors who encounter the Warden are already deep into a run with significant gear and upgrades.
- The Warden's attack pattern is deliberately slow and telegraphed, creating a rhythm-based dodge challenge that contrasts sharply with the faster, more chaotic bosses in earlier stages.
- Artifacts in Risk of Rain 2 occupy a distinct item category separate from weapons, armor, and utility items, and they generally cannot be sold, destroyed, or dropped—once picked up, they are permanent for that run.
- The Warden's visual design—broad-shouldered plate armor, a glowing amber visor, and a massive single-blade weapon—makes it one of the most visually distinct bosses in the game and a fan-favorite subject for fan art.
