Artifact of the Revenant
Die once. Strike twice as hard. Bleed less than you think you can.
The Artifact of the Revenant is a rare pickup item in Risk of Rain 2, a small crystalline shard that pulses with a faint, sickly luminescence. Unlike most artifacts that grant a straightforward buff the moment you collect them, the Revenant demands a far steeper price: picking it up instantly kills you. Your character crumples, the Wisp flickers, and you respawn at the last checkpoint—only to discover that something has shifted beneath the skin. You are weaker, more fragile, but your strikes carry a deadlier weight than before.
It sits in the Rare tier of the artifact pool, meaning it is far less common than the everyday trinkets littering the alien terrain. Survivors who find it face a simple, brutal calculus: trade a comfortable safety margin for raw offensive power, and accept that one stray hit from a mid-tier enemy could end the run. Many do. Many don't survive long enough to regret it.

Lore & Background
The alien world of Risk of Rain 2 is littered with objects that do not belong to any single ecosystem. Crystals, machined fragments, organic growths fused with metal—they scatter across every biome from the sun-scorched Dunes to the fungal tangles of the Gloom. The Artifact of the Revenant is among the stranger of these: a shard that seems to remember a heartbeat that is no longer there. Survivors who have handled it describe a brief, cold stillness at the moment of collection, as if the object is listening for a pulse before deciding to take one.
The name itself carries weight in the scattered lore fragments survivors exchange at the extraction point. A revenant, in the old tongue, is the one who walks back. The artifact does not raise the dead so much as it rewrites the living into something thinner and sharper. There is no evidence in the known canon that the Revenant is crafted by any single faction; it simply exists, as most things on this world do, in a state of quiet, patient waiting.
What the Wisp thinks of the Revenant is never stated. It hovers a little farther away after you collect it, its glow dimming for just a moment before steadying. Whether that is fear, respect, or something closer to recognition is a question the survivors at the extraction point still argue over.
In Their Own Story
The Dunes were quiet, which on this planet meant the quiet before a storm of chitin and acid. She crouched behind a broken spire, watching the distant ridge where the extraction beacon was supposed to be, and noticed the shard half-buried in the sand. It was small. No bigger than her thumb. It glowed the colour of a bruise healing wrong.
She knew what it was. Everyone who had been out here long enough knew what it was. She thought about the three health bars she had, the slow drip of the Wisp's healing, the comfortable rhythm of dodging and firing. Then she thought about the two-legged thing with the jaw that opened like a door, waiting for her on the other side of the ridge.
She picked it up.
The world went white, then black, then the grey of the checkpoint. The Wisp's light was steady. Her health bar was a sliver, a thread, a single fragile line. She tested her pistol on a dead rock. The impact crater was twice the size it should have been.
She smiled, and the smile did not reach her eyes, and she ran toward the ridge.
Reader's Guide
Effect: Upon collection, the player character takes lethal damage and dies. The Wisp carries you back to the most recent checkpoint. You respawn with your maximum health permanently reduced to 1 for the remainder of the run. In exchange, all of your damage output (melee, ranged, and ability-based) is multiplied by a significant factor (approximately 2×). The buff is permanent for that run and does not decay.
Obtaining: The Artifact of the Revenant spawns as a Rare-tier item pickup in the world. It can appear in any biome, in chests, in the open terrain, or as a drop from high-tier enemies. It is not guaranteed in any specific location and may not appear in a given run at all.
Stacking: The artifact is single-use per run. Picking up a second copy (if one somehow spawns) has no additional mechanical effect. It does not stack with itself.
Interactions: The 1-HP state means any single hit from most enemies will kill you, making positioning and dodge timing critical. The Wisp's healing still functions but is largely irrelevant at 1 HP. Damage multipliers from other artifacts (e.g., Artifact of the Bloodmoon, Artifact of the Symbiont) apply on top of the Revenant's multiplier, compounding your offensive output. Healing items and health-regen buffs become nearly useless. The buff does not interact with the damage-reduction or invulnerability frames of character-specific abilities.
Edge case: If you are already at 1 HP when you pick it up, the death-and-respawn still triggers. If you collect it during a multi-hit combo, the combo is interrupted by the death.
Did You Know?
- The Revenant is one of the few artifacts in Risk of Rain 2 that actively kills you as part of its activation, making it the only pickup where the 'reward' and the 'cost' are the same event.
- Because your health drops to 1, the Wisp's passive healing still ticks but is functionally meaningless, turning the companion into a purely cosmetic presence for the rest of the run.
- The artifact's damage multiplier is multiplicative, so stacking it with other damage-boosting artifacts can push your per-hit output into numbers that make early-game enemies evaporate on contact.
- The Revenant's rare-tier spawn rate means many full playthroughs will never present it to a player, making the decision to grab it (or leave it) a moment that does not always arrive.
