Chomper

A small green mouth in the dirt, always hungry, always waiting.

Chomper

The Chomper is one of the most instantly recognizable enemies in Risk of Rain, a small, round, green plant-like creature that lurks in the soil and snaps at unsuspecting survivors who wander too close. It serves as a quintessential early-game threat, introducing new players to the constant, low-level danger that permeates every biome on the planet.

Though individually unremarkable, Chompers appear in large numbers across the overworld, creating a persistent ambient pressure that forces survivors to keep moving and stay alert. They are the kind of enemy that defines the game's tone: the planet is hostile not just through its massive bosses, but through the countless small mouths waiting to bite.

Lore & Background

No one on the expedition remembers who first named them. They simply chomp. That is the whole of their purpose, the whole of their existence: a small, bulbous green body half-buried in the soil, a wide toothy maw that snaps shut with surprising speed when a survivor's boot breaks the stillness of the grass. They do not chase. They do not coordinate. They simply wait, patient as a weed, and strike when the world wanders within reach.

Biologists aboard the dropship theorized they were some form of carnivorous flora native to the planet's surface, adapted to a world where movement is scarce and ambush is the only viable hunting strategy. Their numbers are staggering. Every forest clearing, every meadow, every stretch of dirt path seems to host dozens of them, dotting the landscape like green buttons sewn into the earth. They are not dangerous in the way a Director's champion is dangerous. They are dangerous in the way a field of thorns is dangerous: individually trivial, collectively exhausting.

Survivors who have lost a full run to nothing more than a dozen Chompers and a bad luck streak will tell you that the little green mouths are the true face of the planet. Not the titans. Not the storms. Just the quiet, hungry, patient dirt that bites back.

In Their Own Story

The forest was quiet in the way that made Marcus's skin crawl. No wind. No birds. Just the soft crinkle of his boots on dead leaves and the distant hum of the Director's signal overhead. He'd been walking for twenty minutes without a single encounter, and that, he knew, was worse than any fight.

Then the ground twitched.

A green dome rose from the soil six meters ahead, splitting open with a wet, rubbery snap. A row of small, blunt teeth glistened. It didn't lunge. It just… opened. Waited. His finger hovered over the trigger of his rifle, and he realized with a slow, sinking feeling that there were three more domes behind it. Five. Ten. The whole clearing was a field of them, all still, all watching, all patient.

He fired one. It split in half, green ichor spraying the grass. The others didn't flinch. They just stayed open, mouths agape, as if to say: *go on. We're not done yet.*

Marcus walked faster.

Reader's Guide

Name: Chomper Role in the run: Basic melee enemy, early-to-mid game.

The Chomper is a small, stationary, plant-like creature that sits half-buried in the ground. When a survivor enters its short attack radius, it lunges forward with a quick chomping snap, dealing a modest melee hit. It does not chase, does not fire projectiles, and has very low health. A single well-placed shot from most weapons will eliminate it.

First appearance biome: Forest (and numerous other overworld biomes in Risk of Rain 1). They are ubiquitous, appearing in nearly every surface-level area.

Behavior and threat level: Individually, a Chomper is one of the weakest enemies in the game. The real threat comes in numbers. They spawn in clusters, and in later stages or with high difficulty modifiers, their density can create a persistent chip-damage environment that drains health and forces survivors to constantly reposition. They are especially annoying in tight corridors or when a survivor is already low on health.

How to counter: Keep distance. Area-of-effect weapons (shotguns, flamethrowers, explosives) can clear a cluster in one swing. Moving weapons and strafing patterns let you pop them one at a time without stopping. If you find yourself surrounded, a quick dash or backflip out of their radius is all it takes to reset the encounter. They are not worth stopping to fight unless you need the small XP drop to fill a level gap.
