Artifact of the Ancients

A fragment of a dead civilization's power, waiting in the dirt for whoever dares to pick it up.

Artifact of the Ancients

The Artifact of the Ancients is a collectible relic found within the ancient ruins and overgrown structures of the alien planet in Risk of Rain (2013, Hopoo Games). It is one of the many fragments of a long-lost civilization's technology that litter the planet's surface, waiting to be claimed by a survivor who stumbles upon it mid-run. Picking it up grants a tangible boost to the survivor's capabilities for the remainder of that descent, making it a small but meaningful reward in a game defined by escalating danger.

As a run-limited pickup, the Artifact of the Ancients exists only for the duration of a single descent. It cannot be banked, traded, or carried between runs. Its presence in the world reinforces the game's central mystery: who built these vast, half-buried structures, and what drove them to leave behind scattered, half-functional relics across an entire planet?

Lore & Background

The planet that serves as Risk of Rain's stage was not always a wasteland of rust, overgrowth, and alien fauna. Long before the first survivor pod cracked open in the sky, a civilization here built vast structures, laid out corridors of purpose, and left behind artifacts whose function has been lost to time. The Artifact of the Ancients is one such relic: a dense, angular object that hums faintly with residual energy, its surfaces etched with geometric patterns that no living engineer on the planet can fully decipher.

Survivors who find these artifacts report a sudden surge in physical capability—strength, resilience, or sharpness—lasting only as long as the run itself. The effect is immediate, visceral, and temporary, as though the artifact is lending a sliver of its stored purpose to the living creature that touches it before the energy dissipates. This has led to speculation among the few who return from the planet that the artifacts are not weapons or tools in the conventional sense, but something closer to compressed instructions, a civilization's final whispered 'try this.'

The ruins themselves suggest a culture that valued repetition and redundancy. Artifacts appear in clusters, in corridors, in the hollows of broken towers. They are not hidden with malice; they are simply left, the way a gardener leaves seeds in soil, trusting that something will grow from them. The survivors are, in a sense, the unintended gardeners of a dead world.

In Their Own Story

The corridor was dark the way all the deep corridors were—wet, close, smelling of iron and something sweeter, like overripe fruit left in a closed room. Mara's flashlight carved a pale wedge through the black and caught the edge of it: a slab of dark metal, no bigger than a forearm, half-swallowed by a tangle of pale root-fibers. She crouched. Pulled the roots aside with two fingers, feeling them snap like dry thread. The object was warm. Not hot—warm, the way a stone is warm after a long afternoon of sun, except there had been no sun down here for what felt like centuries.

She picked it up. The moment her skin made full contact, a low thrum ran up her wrist, through her elbow, and settled behind her sternum like a second heartbeat. Her muscles tightened. Her vision sharpened at the edges. Somewhere far above, in the green-grey sky she could no longer see, a pod would be waiting, and a timer would be counting down, and the things in the walls would be listening for the sound of her boots on the metal floor.

She pocketed the artifact. Walked on. Did not look back at the corridor, or the roots, or the dark that was already closing over the space where the object had been, as if the planet were slowly, patiently, taking it back.

Reader's Guide

EFFECT: Grants a one-time, run-limited boost to the survivor's core stats (damage and/or health) upon pickup. The bonus persists for the remainder of the current descent and is lost when the run ends. It does not stack with a second pickup of the same artifact type within a single run.

OBTAINMENT: Found as a ground-level pickup in ancient ruin areas, broken structures, or deep-corridor zones. It appears as a distinct angular object on the ground, visually differentiated from standard loot. It is not guaranteed to spawn every run; placement is randomized among the artifact spawn pool.

STACKING RULES: Collecting a second identical artifact in the same run does not double the effect. The bonus applies once. Different artifact types can be collected in the same run and their effects are additive.

INTERACTIONS: The stat boost from this artifact multiplies against any base stat modifiers the survivor already has (e.g., character-specific damage bonuses). It does not interact with or alter the behavior of other artifacts. It has no effect on enemy AI, drop rates, or the run's difficulty scaling.

EDGE CASES: If the survivor dies and respawns (where applicable), the artifact's effect is lost. It cannot be dropped, traded, or stored. It has no interaction with the game's item-sell or inventory-management systems, as it is consumed immediately upon pickup.
