The Monolith
The gateway to the next stage, activated by defeating the boss—no judgment, just progression.
The Teleporter is the primary objective and central mechanic of the Risk of Rain universe. Found on each stage of Planet L, this ancient device activates after a Survivor defeats the stage's boss, allowing passage to the next area. It is not a colossal artifact but a functional gateway, its design varying across biomes, and its activation triggers the next phase of the Survivor's journey—or the start of a new cycle.

Lore & Background
As Survivors progress through each stage, they must locate the Teleporter, defeat the boss it summons, and activate it to move forward. The Teleporter's influence is tied directly to the planet's cycle, warping the environment and escalating enemy difficulty with each use. It remains a silent, functional mechanism—neither judging nor testing—simply enabling the Survivor's relentless loop through Planet L's biomes, from the Distant Roost to the final showdown on Sky Meadow or the Contact Light.
In Their Own Story
The rain had turned from water to acid, then to ash, but the Survivor stood firm before the towering spire. Its surface shimmered with colors that hurt the eyes, pulsing in a rhythm that matched their own frantic heartbeat. 'Just one more step,' they whispered, clutching a weapon worn down by eons of combat. The air crackled as the Monolith's energy flared, illuminating the ruins of a thousand fallen heroes. With a final surge of adrenaline, they touched the glowing surface. The world dissolved into light, and for a moment, there was silence—then the scream of the void.
Reader's Guide
The Monolith biome is not a traditional landscape but rather a focal point within the Celestial Archives, often appearing as the last area before teleportation. Visually, it is dominated by the massive, geometric structure itself, surrounded by floating debris and distorted terrain that shifts with each stage of difficulty. Enemy composition here is intense, featuring high-tier variants of standard foes alongside unique, biome-specific threats like the Celestial Twins or Voidlings in later stages. The environment becomes increasingly hostile as time passes, with hazards such as falling asteroids, gravity wells, and sudden teleportation events becoming more frequent. As the run progresses, the Monolith's glow intensifies, and the surrounding area may warp into surreal dimensions. Players must defend their position against relentless waves while managing the rising difficulty multiplier. Successfully activating the Monolith triggers the end-of-run sequence, offering a chance to escape or face even greater challenges.
Did You Know?
- The Teleporter is the only consistent objective across all stages in both Risk of Rain games; however, a Monolith structure does exist in canon—it appears on the stage 'Siren's Call' in Risk of Rain 2.
- In Risk of Rain 2, the final stage is Sky Meadow, not 'Celestial Archives'; in the original game, the final stage is Contact Light.
- Activating the Teleporter usually requires defeating the stage boss, but the Celestial Portal in Risk of Rain 2 provides an alternative ending that does not require defeating the boss.
- The Teleporter appears in both games, but its role is purely functional: it does not test worthiness or grant special endings based on survival.
