Crab
Slow, armored, and relentless — the Crab doesn't need speed to bury you.
The Crab is one of the most immediately recognizable creatures in the Risk of Rain universe. A hulking, heavily armored crustacean, it patrols the overgrown ruins and caverns of the planet, serving as a staple melee threat for survivors who find themselves stranded in its territory. Its broad, low-slung silhouette and deliberate charging gait make it a fixture of early encounters and a reliable source of pressure throughout a run.
Rather than a rare or elite specimen, the Crab functions as a common-tier enemy, appearing in multiple biomes and scaling in number and toughness as the run progresses. For many players, the first time a Crab's pincers slam into their character's health bar is the moment the game's difficulty curve clicks into place.

Lore & Background
The Crabs of this world are not the small, harmless crustaceans one might expect from a coastal ecosystem. Something about the planet's strange atmospheric conditions and the pervasive alien flora has pushed these creatures toward a larger, more aggressive morphology. Their carapace is thick and layered, suggesting generations of adaptation to survive in dense, root-choked terrain where quick dashes are impossible and brute force is the only reliable defense.
Survivor logs recovered from crashed dropships note that Crabs tend to congregate near water sources and dense fungal growth, as if the overgrowth provides both cover and a steady food supply. They are not pack hunters in the traditional sense, but their sheer numbers in a given area create a wall of chitinous armor that is difficult to punch through. A lone survivor who underestimates a cluster of Crabs will quickly learn that their pincers can crack through a standard exosuit.
In the broader ecology of the planet, the Crabs appear to occupy a middle trophic niche — large enough to be dangerous to survivors but small enough to be preyed upon by the larger apex fauna that lurk in the deeper biomes. This makes them both a threat and, in a grim sense, a resource: their shells are dense, and survivors who manage to harvest them have used the material for improvised armor plating.
In Their Own Story
The rain had not stopped in three days. Mara crouched behind a half-collapsed support beam, her rifle barrel slick with moisture, and watched the Overgrowth breathe. Every few seconds a spore drifted past her visor, dissolving on the glass. Then the ground trembled — a low, rhythmic thud, like a heartbeat made of stone.
Three Crabs emerged from the fungal curtain, their legs folding and unfolding with a wet clicking sound. The largest one, easily the size of a small car, raised its pincers and clicked them shut in a slow, deliberate gesture. It had seen her. Mara exhaled, steadied her aim, and fired a single round into the center of its carapace. The shell rang like a bell. The Crab did not flinch. It began to walk toward her, and the other two fanned out on either side, closing the angle.
She ran.
Reader's Guide
Name: Crab Role in the run: Common melee enemy; early-to-mid game pressure that scales into late-game swarms.
Behavior and attack pattern: The Crab is a slow but heavily armored melee attacker. It locks onto the nearest survivor and charges in a straight line, then swings its pincers in a wide arc. The charge is telegraphed by a brief wind-up and a distinctive leg-scraping sound. If interrupted mid-charge, it recovers quickly and re-engages. In later stages of a run, multiple Crabs will coordinate their approach, flanking from different angles to overwhelm a single target.
First appearance biome: Overgrowth. In Risk of Rain 2 it also appears in the Caves and other biomes.
Threat level: Moderate. Individually, a Crab is manageable with any decent weapon. In groups of four or more, however, its combined armor and pincer damage can shred a survivor who has not yet built up meaningful defense. Its slow speed makes it easy to kite, but its charge closes distance faster than it looks.
How to counter: Keep moving laterally to break its charge line. Ranged survivors should maintain distance and focus-fire the lead Crab to prevent the group from converging. Melee survivors should sidestep the pincer swing and counter during the recovery frame. Area-of-effect weapons and knockback items are particularly effective against clustered Crabs. Avoid engaging more than two at a time until you have sufficient damage output or crowd control.
Did You Know?
- The Crab is one of the first enemies most players encounter in a new run, making it a de facto tutorial opponent for the game's melee-dodge timing.
- Its thick carapace means that low-damage, high-fire-rate weapons are less effective against it than burst-damage or piercing shots, rewarding players who choose the right loadout.
- In Risk of Rain 2, Crabs can appear in multiple biomes, but their Overgrowth variant is the one most associated with the creature's iconic look in promotional art and community fanwork.
- Because the Crab is a common-tier enemy rather than an elite or boss, it does not drop unique gear on its own — but in large swarms it generates enough kill count to push item spawn timers and stage progression.
