The Dark Woods
Where the canopy swallows the light and the Bile stirs in the dark.
The Dark Woods is the starting biome of Risk of Rain 2 (and its predecessor, Risk of Rain), the dense and shadowed forest where every survivor's descent begins. It sets the tone for the entire run: a world choked with overgrown vegetation, bioluminescent fungi, and the slow, creeping hunger of Bile creatures that prowl the underbrush in the perpetual dim light.
As the first stop on the biome progression, the Dark Woods introduces survivors to the core loop—fighting through waves of enemies, collecting items, and searching for the gate that leads deeper into the world. It is the gentlest of the biomes in terms of threat, but its claustrophobic canopy and limited sightlines make it deceptively disorienting for newcomers.

Lore & Background
Before the Monolith's influence twisted the world into a rain-soaked hellscape, the Dark Woods were simply a forest—old, dark, and full of things that moved in the undergrowth. The Bile creatures that infest it are not native in any traditional sense; they are the forest's immune response to the Monolith's corruption, or perhaps the corruption itself wearing the shape of the local fauna. Their bodies glisten with a viscous, organic sheen, and they move with a slow, patient hunger that belies their speed in combat.
Survivors who descend here speak of the way the rain filters through the canopy in thin, cold needles, how the ground is carpeted in moss and the occasional cluster of pale, glowing mushrooms that pulse faintly in the gloom. The trees are twisted, their roots clawing at the surface, and the air carries a faint sweetness that is almost pleasant until you realize it is the smell of Bile residue.
The gate at the edge of the Dark Woods is the first sign that the world beyond is not merely a forest. It hums with a low, resonant frequency, and those who touch it feel the pull of the deeper biomes—the Ruins, the Wasteland, the Caverns—each one a further step from the thin shred of normalcy the Woods still clings to. The Monolith, far above and far below, watches. It always watches.
In Their Own Story
The canopy was so thick you couldn't tell if it was day or night. Rain came through in thin, cold threads, catching the faint blue glow of the mushrooms at your boots. You'd been here maybe ten minutes. Maybe an hour. Time moved strangely under the trees.
A Bile Rat skittered past your leg, its glistening hide pulling itself along a root with wet, deliberate strokes. Behind it, two more. Behind those, the slow, clicking shuffle of a Bile Spider dragging its legs over a fallen log. You raised your weapon. The spider's mandibles opened with a sound like wet tearing.
You killed them. All of them. The Bile pooled on the moss and hissed faintly, and the mushrooms pulsed a little brighter, as if feeding.
Somewhere deeper in the Woods, the gate was waiting. You could feel it in your teeth—a low vibration, like a tuning fork pressed against bone. You wiped the Bile from your hands, checked your ammo, and walked on. The trees closed behind you like a curtain.
Reader's Guide
You start here. Every run, every survivor, every descent into the rain-soaked world begins in the Dark Woods. Expect a dense, low-light forest: twisted trunks, a carpet of moss and dead leaves, and clusters of pale bioluminescent mushrooms providing the only ambient glow. Visibility is limited. The rain is a constant, cold drizzle that filters through the canopy in thin needles. There is no open sky. There is no sun. Plan for close-quarters fights in tight spaces between trees.
Enemy roster: You will encounter Bile Rats, Bile Spiders, Bile Medusae, Bile Crawlers, Bile Moths, Bile Lizards, Bile Ants, Bile Hounds, and the small, fast Gnats. The Bile Crawler and Bile Hound are your first serious threats. They are not fast, but they hit hard and they keep coming. Gnats swarm and are easy to overlook until you are bleeding.
Environmental hazards: The Dark Woods is the gentlest biome, but do not mistake gentle for safe. Dense undergrowth limits your line of sight and makes strafing difficult. Pools of Bile residue on the ground can slow you. The rain reduces visibility over time. There is no acid storm or lava here—that comes later—but the disorientation of the dark canopy is its own hazard.
Gate and progression: The Dark Woods is unlocked by default. To leave, find the biome gate (a humming, monolithic structure) and destroy it to open the path to the Ruins. No key, no puzzle. Just fight through the gate's guardians and break it.
Item drops: Standard item drops apply. You will find the full pool of common and uncommon items here. No biome-exclusive items are locked to the Dark Woods specifically, but early-game drops here shape your entire run. Prioritize mobility and sustain in your first few picks.
Did You Know?
- The Dark Woods is the only biome you cannot skip—every single run in both Risk of Rain and Risk of Rain 2 begins here, making it the most-visited biome in the franchise's history.
- The 'Bile' prefix on the forest's enemies reflects the game's overarching aesthetic of organic, viscous corruption; the creatures appear as if the forest itself is digesting them.
- In Risk of Rain 2, the Dark Woods is intentionally the least punishing biome: enemy health, damage, and spawn density are all lower than in the Ruins, Wasteland, Caverns, or Overgrowth.
- The bioluminescent mushrooms scattered throughout the Dark Woods serve as the biome's primary light source and are a visual signature that distinguishes it from the more structured Ruins or the barren Wasteland.
