Risk of Rain Codexery

Croc

All fang, no mercy—Croc turns the jungle into his personal kill zone.

Croc

Croc is a large, reptilian survivor in Risk of Rain 2, one of the diverse cast of crash-landed beings stranded on an alien world. Built like a hulking crocodilian humanoid with thick scales, powerful limbs, and a heavy tail, he is a frontline brawler who closes distance and shreds enemies with brutal melee swipes. Among the survivors, he represents raw, animalistic strength in a group otherwise dominated by tech-savvy or magically inclined characters.

In gameplay, Croc thrives in close-quarters combat, using his tail and claws to clear swarms while his spike special lets him poke at ranged threats or set up combos. He is a survivor found in the Jungle biome, and his design leans into the theme of a creature perfectly adapted to dense, humid alien vegetation.

Lore & Background

When the survivors' vessel tore apart over the alien world, each one tumbled into a different stretch of hostile terrain. Croc crashed into the thick, dripping canopy of the Jungle, where the air hung heavy with spore clouds and the undergrowth writhed with things that had no business existing. Unlike his fellow survivors, who clung to fragments of technology and training, Croc simply adapted. His scales hardened against the acidic rain, his tail learned to crack the stone-wood of the jungle's ancient trees, and his hunger found a new vocabulary of prey.

Among the survivor group, Croc occupies an uneasy middle ground. He is not the cold, calculating engineer or the desperate, faith-driven bandit; he is something older, something that remembers a world of water and mud and the slow, patient killing of things that swim. The other survivors have learned to respect the silence he keeps, the way he will simply stand at the edge of a clearing and watch the alien fauna with a stillness that makes even the Doctor uneasy. He does not speak much. He does not need to. When the jungle's spore clouds thicken and the ground begins to pulse with something alive, Croc is already moving, claws dragging through the loam, tail coiled and ready.

His spike—a dense, bone-hard projectile he can hurl and retrieve—serves as both a hunting tool and a reminder that even a creature this close to the earth keeps one eye on the sky. It is a small, strange technology, or perhaps a natural adaptation no one has fully explained. Either way, it is his, and in the chaos of the alien world, that is enough.

In Their Own Story

The spore cloud rolled in at dusk—or what passed for dusk under the triple moons. Croc felt it first as a tickle on his snout, a faint sweetness like rotting fruit, then the air turned to syrup around his gills. He dropped to all fours, tail flat against the mossy ground, and listened.

Somewhere in the canopy, something was clicking. Not the rhythmic, harmless clicking of the vine-creatures he'd eaten three times this week. This was faster. Hungrier. The clicking came from below the root-line, from the dark water that pooled in the jungle's hollows, and it was getting closer.

He did not run. Running was for the small ones, the ones with their little metal boxes and their desperate little lights. Croc crouched, drew the spike from the hollow at his hip, and let his claws sink two inches into the loam. The clicking stopped. The water in the hollow went still.

Then the water went still everywhere, and the jungle held its breath, and Croc smiled the slow, toothy smile that made the Bandit cross herself whenever she saw it.

Reader's Guide

Croc is a melee-focused survivor in Risk of Rain 2, found in the Jungle biome. He excels at clearing dense enemy groups through sustained close-range pressure.

Primary Attack: A swift claw/tail swipe that hits in a short arc in front of him. High attack speed makes him a natural swarm-killer, especially in the early game when enemies cluster tightly.

Special – Spike: Croc hurls a dense spike projectile forward. It can be recovered after a short delay, allowing repeated use. This gives him a ranged option for kiting or hitting enemies that would otherwise be safe at distance. The spike also serves as a combo tool—throw, follow up with melee, retrieve, repeat.

Passive: Croc gains a tail-based area attack that hits enemies around him, rewarding aggressive positioning and making him a strong anti-swarmer in tight jungle corridors.

Item Synergies: Croc benefits enormously from items that boost melee damage, attack speed, and movement speed. Bloodthorn, Sanguine Heart, and similar melee-damage items scale his swipe hard. Attack-speed items (e.g., items that increase attack rate) compound with his already-fast primary. Movement-speed items let him stay in the kill zone without getting flanked. Items that boost special damage also help his spike. Because he is a pure melee brawler, he does not benefit as much from ranged-damage or projectile items as other survivors.

Threat & Counter (as a player): Croc's main vulnerability is ranged enemies and bullet-hell patterns. He must close distance, which exposes him to sustained fire. Players should use his spike to poke ranged threats, rely on his tail area attack to clear swarms, and use movement-speed items to reposition quickly. In late game, his melee damage can fall off against high-HP elites, so stacking damage multipliers and using his spike for burst is key.
