Artifact of the Guardian
Three seconds where the rain itself cannot touch you, and then the world remembers you are mortal.
The Artifact of the Guardian is a one-time-use protective relic found throughout the rain-soaked world of Risk of Rain 2. When a survivor picks it up, a brief window of absolute invulnerability washes over them, rendering all incoming damage null for a few seconds. It is the game's most straightforward 'get out of a bad situation' tool, valued not for its power but for the certainty it offers in an otherwise chaotic, difficulty-scaling gauntlet.
Because it is consumed the moment its timer expires, players treat it as a safety net rather than a strategic asset. It sits in the same pocket of the inventory as other artifacts, but unlike damage-boosting relics, it never compounds, never synergizes into a combo, and never lingers. You get one shot, you use it, and it is gone.

Lore & Background
The survivors of the rain-wracked planet have no name for the beings who left these artifacts behind. They simply call them what they are: things that guard. The Artifact of the Guardian is a small, dense object—often described in survivor logs as feeling warm to the touch, almost alive—housed in a casing that seems to deflect even the worst downpours. When activated, it does not create a visible shield or emit a hum. The effect is simply the absence of consequence: bullets pass through, acid hisses against nothing, and the roar of a Behemoth's charge becomes background noise.
What makes the Guardian artifact unsettling to long-time survivors is its silence. Other artifacts crackle, pulse, or leave afterimages. The Guardian does none of these. The moment it activates, the world simply stops being able to hurt you, and the moment it ends, the world resumes as though nothing happened. There is no wind-down, no flicker. It is a hard on/off, and survivors report that the abrupt return of vulnerability feels worse than the danger itself.
In the broader mythology fans have built around the planet's lost civilization, the Guardian is thought to be a final safeguard left for those who were meant to survive a specific moment. Whether that moment was a battle, a sacrifice, or a departure is unknown. The artifact does not explain itself. It simply protects, briefly, and then is spent.
In Their Own Story
The screen is a wall of red. The Behemoth's roar has swallowed every sound, and the survivor's health bar is a thin sliver, flickering. They are pinned against a rock formation, rain lashing sideways, the creature's maw filling the upper half of the view. There is no cover. There is no time to reposition.
Then, out of the corner of their eye, the faint amber glow of an artifact pulses in a shattered chest three meters away. They lunge. The Behemoth's jaw snaps shut where they had been a half-second before. The survivor's fingers close around the warm, dense object, and the world goes quiet.
For three seconds, the rain is just rain. The creature's next strike passes through them like smoke. They feel nothing—no impact, no sting, no fear. They walk forward, calm as a man crossing a street, and the Behemoth's body parts with a wet, heavy thud. The glow fades. The red returns to the edges of their vision. The rain is cold again, and the world is sharp, and they are alive.
Reader's Guide
Effect: Upon pickup, grants the player full invulnerability for approximately 3 seconds. All damage sources—projectiles, melee hits, environmental hazards, DoT ticks—are negated during the window.
Usage: One-time. The artifact is automatically consumed from the inventory the instant the timer expires. You cannot cancel it early or store it for later; the clock starts the moment it enters your inventory.
Stacking: Does not stack. If you pick up a second Guardian artifact while the first is still active, the second is simply added to your inventory as a separate item (or, depending on context, may be lost). Only one invulnerability window can be active at any time.
Interactions: The invulnerability is flat and unconditional. It does not interact with damage-reduction artifacts (e.g., Artifact of the Void) because no damage is being dealt in the first place. It does not prevent knockback or status effects that are not damage-based (e.g., certain slow effects may still apply—verify in-game). It does not protect other survivors in a co-op run; the effect is strictly personal to whoever picked it up.
Edge cases: Picking it up mid-attack animation still triggers the timer immediately. If you die to a damage-over-time effect that was already ticking before pickup, the DoT is halted for the duration but does not reset its remaining ticks—any remaining DoT resumes after the window closes. In practice, this makes it an excellent counter to sustained DoT pressure.
Did You Know?
- The Artifact of the Guardian is one of the very few artifacts in Risk of Rain 2 that deals zero damage and provides no offensive benefit—it is purely a survivability tool.
- Because it activates the instant it enters your inventory, players sometimes use it as a deliberate 'last resort' by picking it up only when a lethal hit is imminent, rather than hoarding it.
- In co-op play, the invulnerability is strictly personal; a teammate standing beside you during the window takes full damage from the same source.
- The artifact's one-time, non-stackable nature means it functions more like a consumable safety net than a build component, setting it apart from most other artifacts that players try to layer for compounding effects.
