Risk of Rain Codexery

Artifact of the Wasteland

The desert gives you more teeth and more treasure—simultaneously.

Artifact of the Wasteland

The Artifact of the Wasteland is a one-time pickup in Risk of Rain 2 that embodies the franchise's core philosophy: the deeper you go, the more the world pushes back. Grab it and every enemy on the stage grows visibly tougher—more health, harder hits—yet in exchange they shed additional loot when they fall. It is the run's great gamble, a single glowing object that can turn a comfortable mid-game into a frantic, high-stakes gauntlet or, if you're braver than wise, a legendary loot-fest that makes the endgame feel like a cakewalk.

Because it is a permanent, non-stackable effect for the remainder of the run, the moment you pick it up there is no going back. Survivors who grab it early face a dramatically harder curve but a dramatically richer reward table; those who save it for a late-game push can weaponize it against a final wave of bosses. Either way, the Wasteland is watching, and it always collects its due.

Lore & Background

In the scattered oral traditions of the survivors who drift between the shattered continents of the RoR2 world, the Wasteland is not merely a biome. It is a mood, a pressure, a slow exhalation of heat that makes the ground itself feel hostile. The Artifact of the Wasteland is said to be a crystallized fragment of that pressure—a shard of the land's own resentment, solidified into something a hand can hold. Those who have seen one describe it as a rough, amber-stained chunk of mineral that seems to shift and crackle faintly, as though the heat inside it is still trying to escape.

The artifact's effect mirrors the Wasteland stage's own design philosophy in Risk of Rain 2: the environment is unforgiving, the enemies are relentless, and yet the rewards buried in the sand are among the richest on any continent. Picking up the artifact is, in a very mechanical sense, importing that philosophy into every other stage. The Moon's silent corridors suddenly feel crowded with over-armed sentinels; the Deepwood's fungal towers sprout extra thorns. The world tightens its grip, and in return it opens its purse.

Fans often frame the Wasteland artifact as a statement of identity. Choosing it is a declaration that you do not want the run to be easy. You want it to *mean* something. And in a game where the only score is how far you pushed and what you brought back, that declaration is the closest thing to a hero's oath the franchise offers.

In Their Own Story

The sand was still warm from the afternoon when Kaitlyn noticed the glow. It sat in a half-buried chest at the edge of a dune, pulsing with a slow, arterial amber light, and the air around it shimmered like the surface of a hot pan. She could feel it before she touched it—a low, grinding pressure behind her sternum, as if every joint in her body was being tested for weakness. Her squad-mate called from the ridge: "Don't. We're two stages from the boss. Don't."

She picked it up anyway.

The first thing she noticed was the sound. The wind through the dead grass had a new weight, a new *intent*, like it was no longer moving air but pressing against her. The second thing was the enemy that crested the dune three seconds later: a Wisp that should have died in two hits, now swatting her with a crack that sent her tumbling into the sand, her health bar bleeding red. But when it finally shattered, the loot it scattered across the dune was *thick*—three items where one should have been, a rare weapon spinning in the dust like a coin on a table.

Kaitlyn wiped the grit from her visor, grinned, and ran back into the teeth of the storm.

Reader's Guide

Effect: All enemies on the current and subsequent stages gain increased maximum health and increased damage output. In exchange, every enemy kill yields additional loot drops beyond the normal table. The effect is permanent for the remainder of the run and applies to all enemy types, including bosses and elite variants.

Obtained: Found inside chests, dropped by certain elite enemies, or spawned during random events. It appears as a single, non-renewable pickup. Picking up a second copy (if one somehow appears) has no additional effect—the artifact does not stack.

Stacking & interactions: Because it is a flat, non-stackable modifier, it does not multiply with other artifacts that also alter enemy stats. However, it synergizes strongly with any artifact or item that increases your own damage output or loot-table quality, since the extra drops per kill are multiplied by whatever drop-rate bonuses you already carry. Conversely, it compounds the difficulty of artifacts that reduce your defense or increase enemy speed, making late-game survival significantly tighter.

Edge cases: The health and damage increase applies to enemies that spawn *after* you pick up the artifact as well as those already on screen. Minions and summoned entities are affected. The extra loot drops are subject to the game's normal duplicate-item rules; you will not receive two copies of a unique item, but you will receive additional common/rare drops.
