Grunt
Small, green, and always coming in threes—your first taste of the planet's hunger.
The Grunt is one of the most ubiquitous and immediately recognizable hostile creatures in the Risk of Rain series. A small, greenish, roughly humanoid alien, it serves as the quintessential 'first enemy' for survivors dropping into the alien wilderness. Grunts are not particularly intelligent or dangerous in isolation, but they appear in large numbers and form the baseline against which every new player learns the rhythm of dodging, kiting, and building momentum.

Lore & Background
In the broader ecology of the planet, Grunts appear to serve as a mid-level predator, preying on smaller fauna and scavenging after larger beasts. Their presence in the Grasslands suggests they are well-adapted to open, fast terrain, using quick dashes and short bursts of speed to close distance before a single, decisive lunge. They are, in every practical sense, the planet's equivalent of a feral dog: not apex, not rare, but always, always there.
In Their Own Story
The rain hadn't started yet, but the air tasted like it was about to. Kaito crouched behind a half-buried monolith, watching the treeline. Three Grunts. Maybe four. Their green carapaces caught the amber light of the late afternoon, and they moved with that stupid, confident shuffle—two forward, one back, like they were arguing with each other about which direction to lunge. He counted his charges. Two. Maybe three, if he was feeling lucky. The nearest one tilted its head, those forward-facing sensors swiveling toward him with a slow, mechanical patience. It didn't rush. It never rushed. It just waited for him to make the first mistake, the way they always did, the way every survivor who'd ever dropped onto this godforsaken planet made the first mistake. Kaito exhaled. He'd make it. He'd make it this time.
Reader's Guide
Name: Grunt Role in the run: Baseline melee enemy; the primary source of early-game pressure and the first obstacle survivors must overcome to build item stacks and momentum.
Key abilities / attack patterns: The Grunt's sole attack is a short, fast lunge—roughly two to three meters of forward dash ending in a swipe. It has a brief wind-up (a slight crouch and arm raise) that gives experienced players a readable telegraph. Grunts do not attack from range, do not use projectiles, and do not perform special moves. In packs of three or more, they will loosely flank, with one or two pressing forward while another circles to the flank.
First appearance biome: Grasslands (the default starting biome in Risk of Rain 2). They also appear in the Forests and later biomes in smaller numbers, but the Grasslands is where they dominate the early encounter table.
Behavior & threat level: Low individual threat. A single Grunt can be dispatched in one or two hits by most survivors. The real danger is being caught in a pack with no cover, especially before you have mobility or AoE items. They are persistent but not aggressive beyond a short pursuit radius—if you break line of sight or distance, they lose interest quickly.
Countering: Keep at medium range and punish their lunge with a dodge-attack combo. Survivors with AoE (Lancer's Spear, Commander's Drone, Hon's Dash) can clear packs in one swing. For melee-focused survivors (Commander, Hon), the key is to bait the lunge, sidestep, and counter. Do not corner yourself against terrain with multiple Grunts.
Lore connections: Grunts are the most basic example of the planet's hostile fauna and appear in virtually every biome's early encounter table. They are a narrative shorthand for the idea that the planet is alive, hostile, and indifferent to your survival.
Did You Know?
- The Grunt is essentially the 'training enemy' of Risk of Rain 2—every new player's first kill is almost always a Grunt, making it the de facto tutorial boss of the entire game.
- Despite their low individual stats, Grunt packs in the Grasslands can overwhelm a survivor who has no mobility items, which is why early-game itemization (dodge cooldown reduction, AoE) is so critical.
- Grunts do not appear in the Void biome, suggesting their biology or behavior is incompatible with that environment—or that something else occupies their ecological niche there.
- The Grunt's design in Risk of Rain 2 is a deliberate evolution of the basic melee enemies from Risk of Rain 1, retaining the same 'small, green, lunging' silhouette while gaining more readable animation and pack behavior
