Risk of Rain Codexery

Lobster

Two giant claws, zero patience for anything that moves.

Lobster

Lobster is a playable survivor in Risk of Rain 2, a hulking crustacean warrior who fights with massive, serrated claws. Where other survivors rely on ranged fire or agility, Lobster closes the distance and overwhelms enemies with brutal melee strikes, making them one of the most up-close-and-personal options in the roster.

Available from the very start of a run in the Forest biome, Lobster is a character designed for players who prefer to wade into the thick of a swarm and carve through it. Their kit centers on claw-based attacks and a passive that rewards keeping enemies within striking range, turning every engagement into a close-quarters brawl.

Lore & Background

In the fragmented, post-catastrophe world of Risk of Rain, the Survivors are a motley crew of beings—human, machine, and something in between—pulled onto a single hostile planet by forces none of them fully understand. Lobster is among them, a massive crustacean whose exact origin is never spelled out in the game's sparse narrative. They are one of the few survivors who is clearly not human, yet they fight alongside Commando, Seeker, and the others with the same grim determination.

What little can be gleaned from the game's environmental storytelling suggests that the Survivors were not all on this world before the events of the run. Lobster, like the others, appears to have been brought here—perhaps by the same mysterious signal that draws them back run after run. Their alien biology, with its armored plating and regenerative tissue, hints at a home world very different from the lush, overgrown forests and scorched deserts they now traverse.

Fans often note the quiet camaraderie between the Survivors in the interstitial cutscenes: no one explains themselves, no one asks where the others came from. Lobster simply shows up, cracks its claws, and follows the group into the next biome. In a world that has lost its history, that unspoken solidarity is its own kind of story.

In Their Own Story

The Forest was quiet in the way that only a trap can be quiet. Sunlight filtered through a canopy of alien ferns, dappling the mossy ground in pale gold. Lobster's claws dragged faint furrows in the dirt as it followed the others toward the glowing beacon on the ridge.

A Growler burst from the undergrowth, mandibles snapping. Before it could reach the Seeker, Lobster was already there—two claws sweeping in a wide arc, the impact sending the creature tumbling into a cluster of glowing mushrooms. The creature shrieked, scrambled, and ran. Lobster did not pursue. It simply turned, clicked its mandibles once, and kept walking.

Behind it, the Commando was already reloading. Ahead, the beacon pulsed like a slow heartbeat. There was always another biome. There was always another fight. Lobster had claws. That was enough.

Reader's Guide

Name: Lobster Role in the run: Melee survivor; excels at sustained close-range combat and shredding groups of enemies that close in on the team.

Key abilities and attack patterns: Lobster's primary attack is a claw swipe that hits in a short arc in front of them. Its Special is a heavier, wider claw strike that can hit multiple enemies at once. The Dash is a quick forward lunge that repositions Lobster into or out of a fight. The Passive rewards keeping enemies within a short radius, boosting damage or attack speed while they are nearby. Lobster's kit is designed around staying in the middle of the action rather than kiting.

First appearance biome: Forest (the starting biome of every run).

Lore connections: As a non-human Survivor, Lobster sits alongside Hon and Doris as evidence that the crew is a mix of species. Their presence in the opening cutscenes alongside human survivors underscores the game's theme of disparate beings bound together by a shared, unexplained mission.

Item synergies and tips: Because Lobster is a pure melee character, items that boost attack speed, damage, or melee range compound well. Items that add area-of-effect damage or extra projectiles on hit can turn a single claw swipe into a devastating burst. Conversely, items that rely on ranged crits or projectile count are less effective. Keep enemies in your passive radius by engaging swarms head-on, and use the Dash to reposition when a boss telegraphs a heavy hit. Lobster thrives in dense biomes like the Forest and the later Jungle where enemies are plentiful and close.
