Voidling Phase 2
The hive stops probing and starts hunting in earnest.
Voidling Phase 2 is the second escalation tier of the Voidling enemy AI in Risk of Rain 2, triggered when the in-game calendar reaches Day 3. It represents the point at which the hive-mind behind the Voidlings shifts from a scattered, probing defense to a coordinated, aggressive assault. For the Survivors still stranded on the planet, Phase 2 is the moment the world stops feeling like a hostile wilderness and starts feeling like a siege.

Lore & Background
The Voidlings do not think in the way Survivors understand thought. They are a single distributed organism, a network of bioluminescent, chitinous bodies sharing one vast and patient awareness. In Phase 1 they behave almost like wildlife—ambushing, retreating, testing. But by Day 3, something in the collective shifts. The Void, that dark organic force threading through the planet's geology, seems to tighten its grip. The Voidlings stop scattering and start converging. New body-types emerge from the chrysalis clusters: the Warden, a broad-shouldered sentinel whose shielded carapace forces Survivors to commit to ranged or flanking approaches. The hive is no longer defending territory; it is herding.
In Their Own Story
The campfire crackled, but the sound felt thin, swallowed by the spore-mist that had rolled in with the dawn of Day 3. Axton cycled her rifle's barrel, watching the bioluminescent veins in the undergrowth pulse—once, twice, then in a slow, rolling wave that stretched to the treeline and beyond. Not random. Coordinated.
"It's listening," she murmured, more to the fire than to anyone.
A Warden crested the ridge three hundred meters out, its shield-carapace catching the sickly green glow. It did not charge. It *positioned*. Behind it, a dozen Voidlings fanned in a shallow arc, their mandibles clicking in a rhythm that sounded, impossibly, like a count. One. Two. Three.
Axton shouldered her rifle. The hive had stopped probing.
It was herding.
Reader's Guide
Phase 2 activates automatically the moment the in-game calendar rolls to Day 3. No player action triggers it; it is a function of elapsed time. From Day 3 through Day 4, the following changes apply to every biome you enter:
- **Aggression scaling:** Voidling spawn density increases noticeably over Phase 1. Waves arrive faster, and individual enemies close distance more quickly. The Director also biases its random spawns toward higher-tier encounters. - **New enemy type:** The Voidling Warden enters the rotation. It carries a large frontal shield that blocks most projectile damage from the front, forcing you to flank, use AoE, or burst its rear. Its presence changes positioning: it acts as a mobile wall, protecting the smaller Voidlings behind it. - **Biome behavior:** Spore-charged mists and reduced-visibility effects become more common, especially in the Dark Wood and The Deep. This punishes pure ranged kiting and rewards close-range or AoE Survivors. - **Boss probability:** The chance of a boss spawning at the end of a biome increases compared to Phase 1, though guaranteed boss encounters still follow the standard schedule.
**Strategic shift:** Phase 2 rewards preparation. Stock up on AoE items (Grenades, Thunder Hoof, etc.) before Day 3. If your build is purely single-target ranged, the Warden will punish you hard. Consider bringing a shield or a mobility item to reposition around its frontal guard. The window is short—only two days—but it is the steepest difficulty jump in the run, and surviving it cleanly sets up a comfortable Phase 3.
Did You Know?
- The Voidling Warden's shield is not a separate object—it is a hardened carapace growth, meaning it cannot be destroyed or knocked off. You must go around it or hit from behind.
- During Phase 2, the Voidlings' bioluminescent markings pulse in synchronized waves across the entire biome, a visual cue that the hive-mind has shifted to coordinated aggression.
- The Director's spawn logic in Phase 2 begins to subtly counter the player's dominant damage type, a behavior players colloquially call 'the hive adapting.'
- Phase 2 lasts exactly two in-game days (Day 3 and Day 4), making it the shortest phase in the game's difficulty ladder.
