Risk of Rain Codexery

Mantis

Slow, green, and absolutely committed to turning you into a smear on the cave floor.

Mantis

The Mantis is one of Risk of Rain 2's most visually striking large enemies, a towering insectoid predator whose silhouette instantly reads as a colossal praying mantis reimagined through the game's biomechanical lens. It serves as a classic single-target melee threat: not the fastest thing in the room, but absolutely lethal when it connects.

Players first encounter the Mantis in the Lush Caves, where its emerald-green carapace blends into the dripping, vine-choked stone. It is a staple of early-to-mid runs, often serving as the first 'big hit' that teaches survivors the importance of spacing, dodging, and not standing still while a scythe the size of a car swings overhead.

Lore & Background

The Mantis is a product of the same alien biology that reshaped the planet's fauna after the crash. Where Earth's mantis is a delicate, six-legged insect, this creature is a multi-ton apex predator whose forelimbs have evolved into massive, serrated blades. Its compound eyes track movement with unsettling precision, and its chitinous exoskeleton is thick enough to shrug off what would shatter a smaller enemy.

In the Lush Caves, the Mantis occupies a niche as an ambush predator. It crouches low among the hanging roots and fungal clusters, nearly motionless, before erupting into a lunge that covers several meters in a single burst. Its hunting style is patient and deliberate—watch, wait, strike—making it feel almost intelligent compared to the mindless swarms of smaller creatures that share its habitat.

Survivors who have been caught by a Mantis swing often describe the sensation in the same breath as the Void Stalker or the Golem: a reminder that the planet's wildlife does not care about their gear, their luck, or their carefully hoarded health packs. The scythe does not negotiate. It simply arrives.

In Their Own Story

The cave was quiet. That was the problem. Quiet meant the Mantis was still crouched in the roots above, patient as a stone, watching the survivor's flashlight beam sweep the mossy floor. She could feel it the way you feel a draft before a door opens—a pressure, a shift in the air. Then the green blur. The scythe came in a wide, lazy arc that she barely dodged, the wind of it flattening her hair. She rolled, came up, fired three shots into the chitin. It hissed, a sound like steam off a hot rail, and lunged again. This time she was not fast enough. The tip of the blade caught her shoulder, and the world went white, and the cave went quiet again.

Reader's Guide

Name: Mantis Role: Large single-target melee enemy. The Mantis is a 'tanky hitter'—it has more health than small enemies and deals significantly more damage per hit, but it moves slowly and attacks on a predictable rhythm. It is not a spawner and does not call reinforcements.

Key Attack Patterns: The Mantis has two primary moves. First, a wide arcing swing of its scythe arm, which covers a broad cone in front of it and is telegraphed by a brief wind-up. Second, a lunge/dash that closes the distance to the target in a single burst before it recovers. Both attacks are single-target, meaning it will focus one survivor and ignore others unless that target dies or moves out of range.

First Appearance Biome: Lush Caves, where it is one of the more common large enemies. It may also appear in other biomes in later runs.

Threat Level: Medium. The Mantis is not the hardest enemy in the game, but its damage-per-hit is punishing, especially early in a run before you have heavy armor or dodge cooldowns. A single clean hit can remove a large chunk of health.

How to Counter: Spacing is king. The Mantis is slow, so kiting works well—strafe perpendicular to its approach, keep it at the edge of its lunge range, and punish its recovery frames. Dodge the arc swing by moving laterally rather than backward. If you are a ranged survivor, the Mantis is a good 'focus target' to chip down while it commits to a swing. Melee survivors should time their attacks to the recovery window after its lunge. Avoid fighting multiple Mantises in tight cave corridors where dodging space is limited.

Lore Connections: The Mantis shares the Lush Caves ecosystem with smaller insectoid enemies and the general 'overgrown alien biology' theme of that biome. Its design echoes the planet's broader trend of taking familiar Earth fauna and scaling them into monstrous, biomechanical predators.
