Artifact of the Lost
The colony's last whisper, pressed into your hands like a brand.
The Artifact of the Lost is a one-time pickup found in Risk of Rain 2, tied thematically to the Lost faction—the corrupted remnants of the original colony that now stalk the overgrown ruins of the planet. Picking it up grants the survivor a permanent buff for the remainder of the run, channeling a fragment of the same alien corruption that turned the colonists into the shambling horrors players face in the early biomes.
As with all Artifacts in the game, it is a singular, non-stackable reward tucked inside the larger, glowing Artifact chests that appear in mid-to-late stages of a run. Its presence signals to the player that the planet's original tragedy is still leaking into the present, and that the line between survivor and lost colonist is thinner than it appears.

Lore & Background
The Lost were, once, people. They were the first wave of colonists to set foot on this planet, drawn by coordinates that no one could fully explain. The flora here does not merely grow; it reaches, it wraps, it rewrites. Within a single season the colony's records go silent, and the survivors who emerge from the treeline are no longer the men and women who walked in. Their eyes glow with the same sickly green that stains the spore-fields, and they move with a lurching, half-remembered gait, still reaching for tools and radios that no longer exist.
The Artifact of the Lost is not a weapon or a tool in the way the Ancients left their relics. It feels less like an object and more like a scar that has been peeled off and handed to you. Survivors who carry it report a low, constant hum behind their teeth, a sense that the overgrowth is watching them with something almost like recognition. The damage it grants is not clean; it carries a faint green residue on every hit, as though the planet's corruption is lending its strength willingly.
In the broader mythology of the planet, the Lost represent the first failure—the moment the colony stopped being a colony and became part of the ecosystem. The Artifact is a fragment of that moment, preserved in a form that can be carried, used, and ultimately spent. It is the planet saying: you are not the first to try to leave, and you will not be the last to be changed by the attempt.
In Their Own Story
The chest sat in the middle of what had once been a mess hall, its metal ribs split open by a vine thick as a forearm. Mara crouched, her rifle low, and watched the glow pulse inside—green, slow, patient. The Lost had been quiet today. Too quiet. The kind of quiet that meant they were gathering, repositioning, waiting for the sound of someone opening something they shouldn't.
She pried the lid. The Artifact sat on a bed of dried spores, and the moment her fingers closed around it, the hum started. Not loud. Just behind the molars, just under the skin. A green light bled up her forearm and faded.
Behind her, in the treeline, something turned its head. Something that had once been a woman in a maintenance suit. It watched her with an expression she couldn't read. Then it walked away, back into the green, and the quiet broke.
Mara pocketed the Artifact, shouldered her rifle, and ran.
Reader's Guide
Effect: Grants the survivor a permanent damage increase for the remainder of the run. The buff is applied instantly upon pickup and persists through all subsequent stages, boss fights, and intermissions.
Acquisition: Found exclusively inside Artifact chests, which spawn in mid-to-late stages of a run. These chests are larger than standard loot chests and emit a distinct green-gold glow. The Artifact of the Lost is one of several possible Artifact contents; which one you receive is randomized.
Stacking rules: Non-stackable. Picking up a second copy of the same Artifact in a single run is not possible because Artifact chests do not respawn and each chest contains only one Artifact. You can, however, pick up different Artifacts from different chests in the same run.
Interactions: The damage buff from the Artifact of the Lost multiplies on top of your base damage and any other damage modifiers (weapons, gear, other Artifacts). It does not interact with health, movement speed, or utility stats. Because it is a flat multiplicative increase, it scales well with high-damage builds and boss-fight strategies where sustained DPS matters.
Edge cases: The buff does not affect environmental damage (fall damage, acid pools, etc.). It applies only to damage dealt by the survivor's attacks. If the survivor dies and respawns (where applicable), the buff persists—it is not lost on death.
