Risk of Rain Codexery

Snake

The longer you survive, the harder he hits—and the slower he walks.

Snake

Snake is a playable survivor in Risk of Rain 2, a towering, muscular reptilian humanoid whose very body is built for brutal close-quarters combat. Where other survivors rely on ranged firepower or utility, Snake brings raw, escalating physical power to the alien wilderness, trading speed and range for a damage output that swells the longer the run drags on.

He is one of the franchise's most visually striking characters: a broad-shouldered, scaled warrior who moves with the deliberate, heavy gait of a predator that has never needed to outrun its prey. His design leans into the idea of a creature perfectly adapted to a world that punishes the fragile, making him a natural fit for the game's escalating, item-stacking difficulty curve.

Lore & Background

Snake is a native of the alien world that Risk of Rain 2's survivors crash onto, a creature whose biology is a direct product of the planet's brutal ecology. His massive frame, thick scales, and coiled musculature suggest an evolutionary lineage shaped by a world where soft, fast things die young. He does not speak in the way the human survivors do; his presence is communicated through the ground-shaking cadence of his steps and the wet, snapping crack of his tongue slicing through air.

His most defining trait is his continuous growth. Over the course of a run, Snake's body swells, his shoulders broaden, his claws lengthen. This is not a temporary buff but a reflection of his biology: in his world, a predator that stops growing is a predator that is already dead. The cost is speed. As he becomes a more devastating force, he becomes harder to maneuver, his hitbox expanding, his stride lengthening until he is less a fighter and more a natural disaster in a leather-and-scale carapace.

Fans often read Snake as the alien world's answer to the human survivors who keep crashing into his home. He does not hate them, exactly. He simply exists in a state of perpetual, patient readiness, and when their machines tear open the sky, he answers the way any apex predator would: by growing into the threat until the threat is no longer a threat.

In Their Own Story

The dropship's hull groaned and split, tumbling end over end into the rust-colored canopy of the Coniferous Forest. Snake was already there. He had been there for a long time, coiled beneath a shattered boulder, watching the sky with one heavy-lidded eye. The survivors spilled out, guns raised, boots crunching on dead leaves. They did not see him. Not yet.

By the third wave, they did. He rose from the undergrowth with a sound like a landslide starting, scales catching the low amber light, and swung a forearm the size of a car door through the air. The impact cracked the ground. A bandit drone shattered. The survivors scrambled, firing, retreating, buying seconds.

Snake did not chase. He did not need to. He simply stood, breathing, and grew. Slowly. Inevitably. The forest bent around him. And when the survivors finally turned to run, the path behind them was already narrower than it had been a minute ago, because Snake had gotten wider, and the world had gotten smaller, and he was still not finished.

Reader's Guide

Name: Snake Role in the run: Tanky melee survivor. Snake excels in prolonged, high-difficulty runs where his growing size compounds with item stacks. He is a poor choice for fast, aggressive clears but becomes a wall of damage the longer the run persists.

Key abilities and attack patterns: • Basic Attack: A slow, heavy melee swing with a wide arc. Deals solid base damage that scales with his growth. • Passive (Size Growth): Over time, Snake's body physically enlarges. This increases his melee damage, health, and hitbox while reducing his movement speed. The effect is permanent within a run and does not reset. • Active – Tongue: A long-range, whip-like tongue attack that extends forward. Useful for pulling in or striking enemies at a distance when his melee range is too short to reach.

First appearance / availability: Snake is a starting survivor choice in Risk of Rain 2, available from the moment you select your character before the dropship launch. He does not need to be unlocked.

Lore connections: As a native reptilian of the alien world, Snake represents the indigenous fauna that the human survivors are intruding upon. His growth mechanic mirrors the world's theme of escalating, inescapable pressure.

Item synergies: • Melee-damage and attack-speed items help offset his slow swing cadence. • Health and armor items complement his tanky, size-scaling profile. • Items that increase projectile or ranged damage pair well with his Tongue active. • Movement-speed items are valuable early to counter his below-average base speed before his growth further slows him. • Damage-scaling and health-scaling items benefit disproportionately from his passive size growth, making late-game Snake a glass cannon in reverse: a slow, enormous, nearly unkillable brawler.
