Artifact of the Nomad
The world moves fast; the Nomad's heir moves faster.
The Artifact of the Nomad is a powerful one-of-a-kind item in Risk of Rain 2, belonging to the game's special Artifact class. Named in homage to the original Nomad protagonist of the first Risk of Rain, it grants the bearer a significant and permanent boost to movement speed for the duration of the run. In a game where traversal across vast alien biomes, dodging relentless swarms, and chasing down rare loot define every minute, a flat speed increase is one of the most universally valuable modifiers a survivor can carry.
Unlike standard gear that can be duplicated or swapped, Artifacts occupy their own category: you can hold only one of each, and each one reshapes how you play the run. The Nomad's Artifact is no exception—it doesn't add a weapon or a shield, but it changes the feel of every step you take, making the world feel more responsive and giving you a tangible edge in kiting, repositioning, and reaching objectives before the timer or the horde does.

Lore & Background
Before the Signal went dark and the survivors scattered across the fractured planet, the original Nomad was the one who walked. Not ran, not sprinted—walked with a steady, unbreakable rhythm through jungles choked with spore, across salt flats that sang underfoot, and over the shattered ruins of something that had once been a civilization. The Nomad did not fight the planet; the Nomad simply kept moving, and the planet, for all its teeth and hunger, could not catch what would not stop.
When the survivors of the second wave—Commando, Engineer, Huntress, and the rest—landed on the same alien rock, they found traces of that first walker everywhere. Boot prints in the red soil of the desert. A half-buried pack in the mushroom forests. And in a sealed cache that should not have existed, a single crystalline shard that hummed with residual kinetic energy. They called it the Artifact of the Nomad, and whoever pocketed it felt, for the first time in the run, that the ground was almost kind.
The planet's ecosystem, for all its chaos, seems to respect momentum. Predators track stillness. Spores settle on what lingers. The Nomad's Artifact does not grant invulnerability or a new weapon; it simply makes the bearer harder to pin, faster to reach the next objective, and quicker to slip the grasp of a closing maw. In a world that punishes hesitation, that is enough.
In Their Own Story
The Huntress felt the shard click into her satchel and, for a heartbeat, the jungle slowed. Not the trees—their canopy still churned with the wet click of chitin. Not the air—still thick with the green rot of spore bloom. But her own legs, which had been wading through mud and dodging the snapping jaws of a Spitter, suddenly remembered what it was to be light. She took three steps and was already ten meters down the path. The Spitter's acid spit hissed past her ear, a warm orange streak in the grey afternoon. She did not look back. Behind her, the mud where she'd been standing was already being swallowed by creeping vine. Ahead, the next biome's horizon shimmered, close enough now to almost taste. She ran, and the world, for once, ran with her.
Reader's Guide
Effect: Grants a flat increase to the bearer's movement speed for the remainder of the run. The bonus is additive with other speed sources (e.g., speed gear, character passives) but does not multiply them.
Acquisition: Found inside a dedicated Artifact chest that spawns in a fixed location within the overworld biome. The chest is visually distinct from standard loot chests. It appears once per run; if you miss it, it will not respawn.
Stacking rules: You can hold only one Artifact of the Nomad per run. Picking up a second does nothing. It does not conflict with other Artifacts—you may carry the Nomad's shard alongside, say, the Lich's or the Void's, and their effects operate independently.
Interactions & edge cases: The speed bonus applies to all locomotion—walking, dashing, and rolling—so it synergizes strongly with characters or gear that have short cooldowns on mobility abilities. It does not affect projectile speed, grapple distance, or vehicle handling. If you are knocked back by an enemy, the speed bonus does not reduce the knockback distance. The effect persists through biome transitions and is not lost on death-and-respawn within the same run (you keep it if you survive).
Did You Know?
- The Artifact is named after the Nomad, the silent, unnamed protagonist of the original 2013 Risk of Rain, who never appears in Risk of Rain 2's roster but whose legacy is woven into the world's lore.
- In Risk of Rain 2, all Artifacts are unique per run—you cannot carry two copies of the same one, making each pickup a meaningful, irreplaceable choice.
- The Nomad's Artifact is one of the few Artifacts that modifies a core stat (movement speed) rather than adding a new ability or resource, making it broadly useful regardless of build.
- Hopoo Games designed Risk of Rain 2's Artifact system so that each shard has a distinct visual and audio cue when picked up, letting players feel the weight of a permanent run-altering change.
