Wasp

Small, striped, and never alone—ignore the swarm at your peril.

Wasp

The Wasp is a small, fast-flying insect enemy that haunts the early corridors of the Risk of Rain world. Distinguished by its slender, striped body and rapid, erratic flight path, it rarely appears alone—instead it arrives in buzzing swarms that dart between cover and dive at Survivors with stinging projectiles. It is one of the most recognizable early-game threats, serving as a gentle introduction to the game's swarm-based encounters before things get truly dangerous.

Though individually fragile, Wasps rely on numbers and speed. A careless Survivor who ignores a cluster of them early on can find themselves pinned down by a relentless rain of stingers, forcing them to burn through health or waste precious ammo on what should be a trivial nuisance. They are the world's reminder that even the smallest creatures on this derelict planet have teeth.

Lore & Background

The Wasp is one of countless mutated organisms that have colonized the shattered, overgrown ruins of the world after the great collapse. Where once it might have been a harmless pollinator in some long-lost garden, the radiation and alien flora have twisted it into a territorial, aggressive predator. Its stinger, once meant to defend a hive, now lances out in rapid volleys at anything that moves through its territory.

Survivors who have spent hours crawling through dense jungle or tangled forest corridors speak of the sound first: a high, thin whine that grows louder as the swarm closes in. The Wasps do not seem to coordinate in any intelligent sense, yet their collective movement creates a chaotic, almost fluid wall of motion that is genuinely difficult to break through with slow-firing weapons. They are not smart, but they are fast, and they are never alone.

In the broader ecology of the world, the Wasp occupies a low rung on the food chain. Larger predators—spiders, reptilian things, the various armored brutes that roam the deeper biomes—will scatter a swarm with a single strike. But for a Survivor who has already lost half their health to a Grunt and is picking their way through a thicket, a dozen Wasps can be the difference between making it to the next drop pod and becoming another skeleton in the undergrowth.

In Their Own Story

The forest was quiet in the way that only a dead forest can be quiet—no birdsong, no wind through the canopy, just the wet drip of condensation off rusted rebar jutting from the soil. Mara adjusted her grip on the shotgun and stepped over a root the size of her forearm.

Then the whine started. Thin, high, almost musical. It came from above, from the tangle of dead vines and shattered glass panels overhead. She looked up and saw them: a dozen, maybe twenty, small dark shapes pulsing against the grey sky, their wings a blur. They hung in a loose, rotating cluster, and then they dropped.

Not all at once. Three, then five, then the rest, each one a tiny dart of yellow and black stitching through the air. The first stinger caught her shoulder and she felt it like a hot needle. The second sparked off the metal plate on her chest. The third she ducked, the fourth she sidestepped, but the fifth and sixth arrived together and she was already turning, already bringing the shotgun up.

The first blast took four of them. The second took six. The remaining few scattered, their whine rising to a shriek, and they were gone, spiraling up into the canopy. Mara exhaled. Wiped the stinger-mark from her cheek. Kept walking.

Behind her, in the tangle of roots, the rest of the swarm was already regrouping.

Reader's Guide

Name: Wasp Role in the run: Common early-game flying enemy; introduces swarm mechanics and projectile-dodging to new Survivors.

Key abilities / attack patterns: Wasps fly in loose, rotating clusters and dive toward the nearest Survivor in short bursts. During a dive they fire one or two fast, straight-line stinger projectiles. After a dive they pull back up and rejoin the cluster, creating a rhythmic in-and-out pattern. They do not use area-of-effect attacks or charge attacks; their danger is purely volume and speed.

First appearance biome: Forest (and similar early-game overgrown biomes). They are among the first enemies a Survivor encounters after leaving the drop zone.

Lore connections: The Wasp is part of the mutated fauna that has reclaimed the ruined infrastructure. It shares the overgrown, post-collapse setting with nearly every other enemy and is often found near the larger, more dangerous predators that also inhabit the forest.

Behavior & threat level: Individually very low threat—low health, minimal damage per stinger. In groups of 8–15 they become a genuine nuisance, especially for Survivors with slow-firing weapons or low mobility. They are not a boss-level threat but can chip down an already-injured Survivor quickly if ignored.

How to counter: Area-of-effect weapons (shotguns, grenade launchers, flame) shred swarms efficiently. Fast-firing rifles let you track them between dives. Mobility is key: strafing perpendicular to their dive angle makes stingers miss. Do not stand still and spray; move, pop a few, reposition. If a swarm appears alongside a larger enemy, prioritize the larger threat and let the Wasp stingers be a secondary concern.
