Risk of Rain Codexery

The Fungal Wastes

Where the forest rots into something ancient, hungry, and very much alive.

The Fungal Wastes

The Fungal Wastes is one of the most visually striking biomes in Risk of Rain 2, a sickly overgrown expanse dominated by colossal mushrooms, creeping mycelial networks, and a perpetual haze of drifting spores. It typically serves as the second biome survivors encounter after the Dark Woods, marking a sharp tonal shift from the forest's muted greens into a palette of bruised purples, toxic greens, and pale bioluminescent blues.

In the broader context of the expedition, the Fungal Wastes represents the point where the world's underlying corruption becomes impossible to ignore. The flora here has mutated beyond recognition, and the fauna that dwells among the fungal towers is aggressive, spitting caustic secretions at anything that moves. Survivors who push through this biome are rewarded with a distinct item pool and a deeper understanding of what happened to this world long before they arrived.

Lore & Background

Before the expeditioners arrived, the Fungal Wastes was likely a region of the world that had already been overtaken by a vast mycological network. The scale of the fungal growths—mushrooms the size of multi-story structures, root systems that crack the ground into jagged plates—suggests this takeover was not a recent event but the culmination of centuries, perhaps millennia, of unchecked growth. The bioluminescent caps and the way spores drift in slow, almost deliberate clouds give the biome a quality of patient, slow-motion predation, as though the environment itself is digesting the world around it.

The Spitter creatures that inhabit these fungal towers appear to be in some form of symbiosis with the mycelium. They perch on the gill structures of the largest mushrooms, regurgitating caustic secretions that accelerate the spread of fungal matter across the terrain. Whether the creatures are parasites, symbiotes, or simply another layer of the same organism is unclear, but the visual language of the biome treats them as extensions of the fungal architecture rather than separate animals.

For the survivors descending into this biome, the Fungal Wastes functions as a threshold. The Dark Woods, for all its danger, still resembled a world that had merely been abandoned. Here, the world has been actively consumed. The monolith at the biome's edge, wreathed in spore drift and fungal tendrils, serves as both a gate to the next region and a reminder that the expeditioners are not exploring a wilderness—they are trespassing in a living, growing, and very old organism.

In Their Own Story

The spore cloud rolled in without warning, swallowing the treeline in a wall of pale green mist. Kai coughed, pressing her sleeve over her nose, and watched her squadmates scatter into the undergrowth between the giant gill structures. The air tasted like copper and wet chalk. Somewhere above, a Spitter let out a wet, clicking shriek and a glob of acid hissed into the cap of a mushroom three times their height, the surface bubbling and blackening where it struck.

"Keep moving," she said, though her voice came back to her muffled, as if the spores were filling the space between her words. The monolith was close—she could see its dark silhouette through the haze, fungal threads crawling up its face like veins. Just a little further. Just past the last cluster of bioluminescent caps that pulsed a slow, sickly blue in the dim light. She tightened her grip on her weapon, felt the acid mist on her skin, and stepped into the cloud.

Reader's Guide

VISUAL IDENTITY: Expect a landscape dominated by towering mushrooms with broad, gilled caps in shades of deep purple and toxic green. The ground is a patchwork of cracked earth and pale mycelial mats. Bioluminescent spots dot the larger fungal structures, casting a dim blue glow. The overall atmosphere is humid, dim, and saturated with drifting particulate spores.

ENEMIES: The primary threat is the Spitter family—small, medium, and large variants that perch on fungal structures and lob caustic projectiles. They are fast, numerous, and tend to appear in clusters. Stay mobile; standing still in a Spitter's line of sight is a death sentence.

HAZARDS: Spore clouds drift through the biome in slow, rolling banks. They reduce visibility significantly and deal lingering damage while you remain inside. Watch for the telltale green haze on the horizon and time your pushes through them rather than fighting inside.

MONOLITH: The biome is entered via the monolith at the end of The Dark Woods and exited through its own monolith, which is partially encrusted with fungal growth. Defeat the biome's enemies to activate it.

ITEMS: The Fungal Wastes drops a distinct pool of items compared to earlier biomes, generally leaning toward utility, sustain, and spore-themed effects. Keep an eye on the ground after each encounter—items scatter across the fungal terrain and can be hard to spot in the haze.

TIP: Bring a visibility-boosting or movement-speed item if you can. The spore clouds punish slow, deliberate play more than they punish aggressive, mobile combat.
