Artifact of the Siren
The siren sings, and the dead leave a gift behind.
The Artifact of the Siren is a pickup item in Risk of Rain 2, a top-down co-op roguelike set on a hostile, overgrown alien planet. Found inside supply chests or dropped by the Director, it is one of dozens of small, single-use modifiers that reshape a run's economy and difficulty. Its name evokes the old maritime legend of a voice that lures sailors toward the rocks; here, the siren's call instead lures mercy out of the enemies that hunt you.
In practical terms, the Siren nudges the planet's brutal loot economy in the survivors' favor by increasing the likelihood that defeated enemies will leave behind a health pack. In a game where every bullet and every vial of healing fluid is precious, even a modest bump in drop rates can mean the difference between a clean extraction and a slow, bloody crawl back to the dropship.

Lore & Background
The artifacts scattered across the planet's ruins were never manufactured by any known civilization. They appear in sealed supply caches, in the hoards of elite enemies, and occasionally vomited from the Director's own body as if the creature itself were a walking reliquary. Survivors who have spent years on the planet treat them the way sailors once treated compasses: indispensable, mysterious, and never fully understood.
The Siren, specifically, carries a faint bioluminescent residue that pulses in slow, rhythmic intervals—almost like a heartbeat, or like the rising and falling of a tide. In the old maritime stories, the siren's song was a promise of safe harbor that was, in truth, a death sentence. The artifact inverts that bargain. The planet's ecosystem, for all its savagery, still operates on a kind of cold reciprocity: kill enough, and it will, in small measure, give back. The Siren simply makes that reciprocity a little louder, a little more willing.
No one on the planet can explain why the artifact works the way it does. The Survivors' Collective has logged thousands of runs and the data is consistent: more Sirens, more vials. The mechanism remains opaque. Whether it is a chemical signal released into the local fauna, a subtle shift in the planet's own weather systems, or something stranger still, no one has cracked. The artifact does not glow, does not hum, does not demand anything of the wielder. It simply is, and the world bends a little around it.
In Their Own Story
The dropship's engines were still spooling when the first wave hit. Kaito counted the bodies—seven, eight, nine of those long-limbed things dragging themselves out of the mud with their jaws full of chitin. He'd killed maybe forty in the last two sectors. Forty, and not a single health pack. His HP bar was a thin red thread, and the Director was already circling, that impossible geometry of a face tilting toward him like a question he couldn't answer.
Then the chest cracked open in the next clearing, and the little iridescent thing tumbled out, pulsing its slow tidal glow. He picked it up. The world didn't change. The air still tasted like copper and rot. But when the next three creatures went down, a small blue vial rolled out from under each one, and Kaito felt something he hadn't felt in six runs: the faint, stupid, human hope that maybe this time the planet would let him go home.
Reader's Guide
Effect: Increases the base chance that defeated enemies drop a health pack. Each copy of the Artifact of the Siren adds to this chance additively, so carrying two or three copies compounds the benefit. There is no known hard cap, but the practical ceiling is limited by the base drop rate itself—once the probability is high, additional copies yield diminishing real-world returns.
Obtained from: standard supply chests (common tier), the Director's death drop, and a small chance from elite or boss-tier enemy kills. It is not craftable and does not appear in the starting inventory.
Stacking rules: Multiple copies of the Siren stack linearly (e.g., two copies = double the bonus, three = triple). It does not multiply with itself. It also does not interact with or modify other artifacts' effects; it is purely a drop-rate modifier for health packs specifically.
Edge cases: The Siren does not increase the drop rate of other item types (weapons, armor, other artifacts). It does not affect the health pack's healing value—only the probability of one appearing. If an enemy type has a base health-pack drop rate of zero, the Siren's bonus still applies to the underlying probability calculation, but the practical gain may be negligible. The effect resets at the end of each run.
Did You Know?
- The Siren's slow, rhythmic glow animation was designed to visually echo the tide patterns of the planet's coastal biomes, reinforcing the maritime 'siren' metaphor without any explicit dialogue.
- In Risk of Rain 2's co-op mode, the Siren's drop-rate bonus applies globally to all players in the party, not just the player who picked it up.
- The Director, Risk of Rain 2's recurring enemy, has a unique death drop table that includes a higher-than-average chance to yield artifacts, making the Siren a slightly more likely find from that encounter than from a st
- The artifact's name and iconography deliberately invert the classic siren myth: instead of luring the survivor to their doom, the Siren lures a small mercy out of the environment that is otherwise indifferent to their su
