Risk of Rain Codexery

The Distant Woods

Where the trees remember being alive, and the small things remember being hungry.

The Distant Woods

The Distant Woods is the first biome survivors descend into in Risk of Rain 2, serving as the starting point of every expedition. It is a vast, overgrown forest where ancient trees tower above a carpet of moss and tangled undergrowth, and the air hums with the skittering of small, hostile creatures. Though it is the gentlest stretch of the journey, it is far from safe—spitting acid, darting roaches, and flickering wisps patrol the dim canopy in swarms that grow denser the deeper you push.

Its role in the broader expedition is foundational: the monolith that crowns the biome's far end is the first gate survivors must activate, unlocking the Fungal Wastes beyond. For many players, The Distant Woods is where they first learn the rhythm of Risk of Rain—stacking items, managing escalating enemy waves, and deciding whether to push forward or fall back to the dropship.

Lore & Background

The Distant Woods predates the expedition ships by an unknown margin. The trees here are not merely old; they are vast, their roots threading through soil that has not seen open sky in what might be centuries. Bioluminescent fungi cling to bark, and the understory is thick with vines that seem to shift when you are not looking directly at them. Survivors who have walked this stretch describe a persistent feeling of being watched—not by anything large, but by the hundreds of small, quick creatures that fill every shadow and every gap between roots.

The monolith at the biome's heart is a slab of dark, veined stone that rises from a clearing no wider than a dropship landing pad. It does not speak. It does not glow until a survivor places a hand on its surface, at which point a low harmonic tone rolls through the canopy and the path forward opens. Older expedition logs refer to these structures simply as 'gates'—thresholds between one pocket of the world and the next, each one slightly further from whatever 'here' originally was.

What makes The Distant Woods quietly unsettling, even to veterans, is the contrast between its beauty and its hostility. The light filtering through the canopy is warm, almost golden, and the moss is soft underfoot. But the Spitters nest in the branches and rain acid without warning, the Roaches swarm in bursts that can overwhelm a lone survivor, and the Wisps—small, fast, almost invisible in the dappled light—pick off stragglers one by one. The forest is not evil. It is simply full, and it does not make room.

In Their Own Story

The canopy was doing that thing again—the slow, rhythmic creak of branches shifting in a wind the survivor couldn't feel at ground level. Milla adjusted her grip on the spear and counted the Roaches skittering across the moss: four, five, six, a seventh splitting off to the left. She let them pass. They were small. They were not the problem.

The problem was the Spitter three branches up, already drawing a bead of green acid into its mouth, already tilting its head with that patient, almost curious angle. Milla exhaled. The acid dropped. She sidestepped. The sizzle on the moss was a small, bright green bloom.

Ahead, the clearing was visible now. The monolith stood in the center of it, dark and quiet, its surface veined with a faint amber glow that pulsed like a slow heartbeat. The trees leaned away from it, as if they remembered something about that stone and preferred not to be close.

Milla walked in. She placed her palm flat against the cold surface. The harmonic tone rolled out, and the forest—every creak, every skitter, every distant spitting hiss—went silent for exactly one breath.

Then the path opened, and the Fungal Wastes began.

Reader's Guide

Before you drop, know what you're walking into. The Distant Woods is a dense, overgrown forest. Expect tall, moss-draped trees, a thick carpet of green undergrowth, and a warm-but-dim canopy that filters the light into a soft golden-green. The palette is lush: deep greens, amber highlights, and the occasional bioluminescent blue from fungi clinging to bark. The atmosphere is quiet, humid, and faintly wrong.

Enemy roster: you will face Spitters (perched in branches, raining acid projectiles), Roaches (small, fast ground-crawlers that swarm in groups), and Wisps (tiny, quick-flying enemies that dart in erratic patterns). None are individually dangerous, but they stack. By the time you reach the monolith, waves will be dense.

Environmental hazards: the forest floor is uneven with roots and moss. Acid pools left by Spitter attacks can linger briefly. There is no lava, no extreme weather—this is the gentlest stretch. The danger is numerical, not elemental.

The monolith: a dark, veined stone slab in a clearing at the biome's far end. Touch it to unlock the Fungal Wastes. It is the first gate you will activate.

Item drops: standard Risk of Rain 2 loot pool. You will pull from the same shared pool as every other biome, so early-game items, mid-tier gear, and the occasional rare all have a chance. No biome-exclusive items to plan around—focus on stacking synergies that will carry you into the harder biomes ahead.
