Scavenger

Small, fast, and always reaching for what the chaos drops.

Scavenger

The Scavenger is one of the playable survivors in the original Risk of Rain (2013), a top-down roguelike where a small crew of misfits crash-lands on a hostile, alien world and must fight through escalating waves of creatures. Among the roster, the Scavenger stands out as the smallest and most nimble of the group—a wiry, quick-moving figure built for darting between threats rather than standing ground. Their kit leans heavily on speed, evasion, and a unique scavenging mechanic that rewards players who keep moving and stay close to the action.

In a cast that includes heavy hitters, ranged specialists, and support types, the Scavenger fills the role of the fast, fragile skirmisher. They are not the character you pick if you want to tank a room full of enemies; they are the character you pick if you want to be the last one standing because you were never where the damage was.

Lore & Background

The survivors of Risk of Rain are not a military unit or a rescue team. They are a ragtag collection of individuals—engineers, soldiers, medics, scouts—whose craft tore apart on the surface of a planet that should not exist on any star chart. The Scavenger is among them, and like the rest, they do not fully understand how they got there or what the strange, bioluminescent flora and predatory fauna of this world actually are. What they know is that the sky is wrong, the air tastes of copper and ozone, and the things in the dark are hungry.

The Scavenger's place in the group is that of the one who notices the small things. While the Commander barks orders and the Engineer welds a hole in the hull, the Scavenger is already three meters ahead, fingers brushing the alien moss, pockets filling with whatever the ground offers. They are not the strongest, not the most heavily armed, but they have a survival instinct honed by a lifetime of making do with scraps. On a planet where resources are scattered and enemies close fast, that instinct is worth its weight in bullets.

Fans of the original game often note that the Scavenger's design philosophy—small hitbox, high mobility, a kit that rewards aggressive positioning—makes them feel fundamentally different from the other survivors. Where others fight the planet, the Scavenger dances with it, threading through swarms and picking off stragglers before the next wave can form.

In Their Own Story

The crash was not an explosion. It was a slow, grinding tear, the hull screaming as it plowed through a canopy of trees that pulsed faintly violet. The Scavenger was the first out, boots hitting soil that still steamed. They did not wait for the Commander to finish his inventory count. Already they were on hands and knees, prying a shattered panel from the wreckage, pulling out a coil of wire, a half-empty canister of something that glowed green. Around them, the forest was waking. Something large shifted in the undergrowth, and the ground trembled with a low, wet thud. The Scavenger stood, wire coiled around one fist, canister in the other, and smiled the way a rat smiles at a trap it has already figured out. The others were still arguing about the map. The Scavenger was already running.

Reader's Guide

Name: Scavenger Role in the run: Fast, fragile skirmisher. The Scavenger is built for players who prefer constant movement over stationary DPS. Their small hitbox makes them harder to hit, and their speed lets them reposition quickly between waves.

Key abilities / mechanics: The Scavenger's kit centers on agility and a unique scavenging passive that rewards close-range engagement and movement. They are not a backline character; their power comes from being in the thick of the fight and using speed to outmaneuver threats. Their attack patterns favor rapid, close-range exchanges over sustained ranged pressure.

First appearance biome: The Scavenger is available from the start of a run in the original Risk of Rain, meaning they can be encountered in any biome, from the overgrown forest floors to the later, more hostile zones.

Lore connections: As a member of the crash-landed survivor crew, the Scavenger shares the same origin story as the Commander, Engineer, Gunner, and the rest. Their personality—resourceful, quick, slightly feral—contrasts with the more structured roles of the military and technical survivors.

Item synergies: Items that boost movement speed, dodge chance, or close-range damage tend to amplify the Scavenger's natural strengths. Speed-oriented and agility-focused gear makes them nearly untouchable, while items that reward rapid attacks complement their fast, in-and-out playstyle. Avoid builds that lock you in place; the Scavenger is at their worst when they are standing still.
