Risk of Rain Codexery

Artifact of the Flooded

The sea answers the call, and the battlefield drowns in its wrath.

Artifact of the Flooded

The Artifact of the Flooded is one of the rare, one-of-a-kind Artifacts in Risk of Rain 2. Picking it up unleashes a colossal water-borne entity that tears through every enemy on the battlefield in a single, devastating surge. It represents the game's theme of escalating cosmic threats: the longer you survive, the stranger and more catastrophic the rewards become.

As an Artifact, it is non-stackable and triggers its effect the instant it is collected, making it a high-risk, high-reward moment in any run. Players who encounter it often treat it as a turning point, a brief window where the tide of battle shifts overwhelmingly in their favor.

Lore & Background

In the fractured, overgrown world of Risk of Rain 2, the Artifacts are relics of a civilization that predates the current ecosystem—fragments of power left behind by beings who shaped the planet's very weather and tides. The Artifact of the Flooded is thought to be a command sigil, a key that once directed the planet's oceans as weapons. In the hands of a lone survivor, it still carries that authority: a single touch and the water remembers what it was made to do.

The summoned entity bears little resemblance to any creature in the game's bestiary. It is vast, serpentine, and wreathed in churning foam, moving with a slow, inevitable grace that makes it feel less like a minion and more like a natural disaster given a target. It does not think; it simply floods, and whatever is in its path is swept away.

Fans often speculate that the Artifacts are tied to the same ancient intelligence behind the game's larger narrative beats—the signals, the lunar entities, the strange architecture buried beneath the overgrowth. The Flooded, in particular, evokes the idea that the planet's water cycle is not natural at all, but a dormant defense system waiting for a key to be turned.

In Their Own Story

The chest sat half-buried in red clay, its lid split by a root thick as a forearm. You pried it open with the flat of your blade, expecting another useless trinket. Instead, the air in the chamber went cold and wet, as if a tide had just inhaled.

The Artifact hummed in your palm, slick and heavy, and the ground beneath you shuddered. Somewhere far off, a sound like a cathedral bell made of water rolled across the sky. The trees to the north split open, and something enormous, pale and glistening, uncoiled from the undergrowth. It did not roar. It simply turned its vast, eyeless head toward the swarm of insects and spitter-bugs that had been closing in, and the water followed.

You stood very still. The flood passed through the enemies like a river through sand, and where it had been, there was only wet silence and the faint smell of deep ocean. The creature folded itself back into the earth, and the chest was empty. Your hands were shaking. You kept walking.

Reader's Guide

EFFECT: Upon pickup, immediately summons a large aquatic entity (a serpentine, water-wreathed leviathan) that targets and attacks all hostiles within a wide radius. The entity deals heavy damage over a short duration, then dissipates.

ACQUISITION: Found exclusively as a rare drop inside chests. No enemy in the game reliably drops it. It cannot be purchased, crafted, or obtained through any other means.

STACKING: Non-stackable. You may hold only one Artifact of the Flooded per run. Picking up a second (if somehow encountered) does not add a second summon; the item simply cannot be re-collected once its effect has triggered.

INTERACTIONS WITH OTHER ARTIFACTS: Independent. It does not modify, enhance, or conflict with other Artifacts. You can hold multiple different Artifacts simultaneously, each triggering its own effect on pickup. The Flooded's summoned creature does not gain bonuses from other Artifacts' passive effects.

EDGE CASES: The summoned entity attacks all enemies on screen regardless of your current target. It does not damage the player. If you are in a small enclosed area, the entity's pathing may cause it to linger briefly. It will not persist indefinitely—it fades after its attack window concludes. It does not trigger on-screen enemy spawns; it only attacks what is already present.
