Artifact of the Tainted
Corrupt the horde, reap the harvest—every extra hit is a coin in your pocket.
The Artifact of the Tainted is a one-time-use artifact in Risk of Rain 2 that channels the corrupting energy of the alien world into the enemies around you. Picking it up and activating it transforms the enemies in the current stage into their Tainted (corrupted) variants—brutish, enhanced versions that hit harder, move faster, and carry upgraded weapon loadouts.
It is a double-edged tool: the same corruption that makes foes deadlier also makes their drops richer, and the visual shift of an entire stage turning sickly and pulsing is one of the game's most striking set-pieces. Players who enjoy high-risk, high-reward encounters often seek it out deliberately, while cautious squads may avoid it entirely.

Lore & Background
The Tainted are not a separate species but a symptom. The alien biosphere of the planet where the survivors crash is saturated with a mutagenic spore that rewrites living tissue, grafting extra limbs, thickening carapaces, and overcharging the bio-electric organs of native fauna. The Artifact of the Tainted is a concentrated vial of that spore, harvested and sealed by the same unknown force that seeded the planet's ecosystems in the first place.
Survivors who crack open the vial in the field report a sickly green luminescence spreading through the undergrowth within seconds. Regular enemies shed their normal coloration, their eyes flare, and their attacks gain a wet, tearing quality. The Tainted do not think differently—they simply hit harder, swing faster, and refuse to die as quickly. But their ruptured bodies burst with higher-grade salvage, and the spore-laced flesh they shed can be traded for better gear at the next extraction point.
Whether the spore is a weapon, a fertilizer, or a test is never made explicit. The Artifact simply exists, waiting in a chest or tumbling from a fallen enemy, and the only question a survivor ever asks is whether the next stage can afford the upgrade.
In Their Own Story
The rain hadn't stopped in three hours. Kaito wiped mud from his visor and watched the Tainted Golem lumber through the treeline, its jaw unhinged, dripping a thick green ichor that sizzled where it hit the wet stone. He'd used the Artifact of the Tainted twenty minutes ago, just to see what it would do. Now the whole valley was a warzone of corrupted things, and every one of them was worth three times the scrap they'd have been before.
Behind him, the squad was laughing. Nervous, wet, but laughing. Someone had already picked up a Tainted-grade plasma cell off the Golem's shattered knuckle and was spinning it on a finger like a coin.
"Next stage," Kaito said, not looking back. "I want another one."
Reader's Guide
Effect: Upon activation, all standard enemies in the current stage are converted to their Tainted variants for the remainder of that stage. Tainted enemies deal increased damage, have enhanced attack patterns, and drop higher-tier loot on death.
Obtaining: Found in item chests and occasionally dropped by enemies across most stages. It appears as a small, pulsing vial with a green glow. Pick it up to add it to your inventory; it does not activate until you use it.
Stacking: Multiple copies can be held simultaneously. Each additional copy you activate intensifies the Tainted state—enemies gain further damage and speed bonuses. There is no hard cap stated in-game, but carrying three or more is considered extremely dangerous.
Interactions: Stacks multiplicatively with other damage-increasing artifacts. Does not conflict with healing or defense artifacts. If you are in a multi-player squad, the Tainted state affects all enemies for all players in the stage, so coordinate before activating.
Edge cases: Bosses are not converted by the Artifact—only standard (non-boss) enemies are affected. Enemies that spawn after activation are already Tainted. The effect does not carry over to the next stage; you must activate a new copy if you want the effect again.
Did You Know?
- Tainted enemies in Risk of Rain 2 are visually distinct: they glow with a sickly green bioluminescence and often have additional limbs or enlarged weapon parts compared to their standard counterparts.
- The Artifact of the Tainted is one of the few artifacts that makes the game objectively harder while simultaneously making it more rewarding, creating a deliberate risk-reward loop.
- In co-op play, activating the artifact is a shared commitment—every player in the stage faces the upgraded enemies, making it a social decision as much as a mechanical one.
- The Tainted enemy concept in RoR2 echoes the broader theme of the game: the alien planet itself is an active, mutating force, and the survivors are always fighting against a world that is rewriting its own rules.
